» Make-up tips

Sandra Omo decides there’s more to make-up than meets the eyeliner

After my last casting ordeal where every model was made to take off their make-up and audition without any, the ‘no make-up’ casting call seems to be everywhere I turn. Prior to now I have not really noticed them, but since my last audition, one in every two or three casting calls I come across reads: “Please come with little or no make-up.”

In addition, I am beginning to wonder how difficult it must be for models that are not used to moving around without make-up. It is not that we would not look good without makeup, it is just that we are no longer used to being without it.

I was talking to an older woman who is not, and has never been, a model about this and she said something that I agree with one hundred per cent. She has worn make-up since she was 15 and now that she is in her forties, it is not a question of whether she would look good with or without make-up, but whether she would feel like herself without it.

» Sam’s of Brighton

Andrew Kay licks his lips in glee at Sam’s of Brighton

Paston Place is dead, long live Paston Place. Few dining venues have had so much written about them in the last ten years, mainly good, occasionally controversial but always passionate. We mourned when Langans closed then cheered at Mark and Nicole’s triumphant tenure, then when they retired we wept once more, only to find ourselves cheering for Francesco – wildly.

When last year the place closed again there was no immediate new tenant and things looked pretty bleak. Would Kemp Town get a replacement fine dining joint or not? We waited but not for long. Sam Metcalfe, chef and co-proprietor of the Sevendials restaurant swept up the option and in a short space of time has opened the eponymous Sam’s of Brighton.

“Sam is one of my favourite chefs. Responsible for cooking the best piece of lamb I have ever eaten’’

This week Katie takes a spin on the big wheel and feels the love

There are two parties on tonight.

The one I’ve got my eye on is the Tatler Restaurant Awards. A foodie celebration organised by the Sloaniest magazine on the block promises to be a champagne-fuelled food-fest – crammed with yummy canapes and celebrity chefs.

I do quite fancy Jamie Oliver, and there’s no food in my fridge – perfect.

Outside our offices the cloud falls into blackness. It’s only six – don’t you hate winter? The rain starts screaming past the windows of the newsroom, rumbling threateningly up the glass.

Anyone with any money, sense or shoes over three inches should be dodging the weather and heading home for a night in; but since I have neither of the first two and am sporting the third I can only keep my fingers crossed.

» Al Start interview

Al Start is a Brighton legend, Paul Disney caught up with the singer, songwriter and is now a huge fan!

Describe yourself?
AS: I’m a 30-something, female singer songwriter from Brighton. Tall and dashing (well, maybe!!).

Why Brighton?
AS: I came to Brighton 20 years ago as a student and fell in love with the place. My romance continues to this day. It’s a unique and fascinating place to live. I’m hooked!

Where did you get that extraordinary voice from?
AS: 80 fags and five cans of Special Brew a day! Oh no, that was Joni Mitchell’s answer to that question! My voice is something I’ve been working on for a long time, kind of you to ask!

What would you change about Brighton and Hove if you could?
AS: Oh now you’re asking. The only thing I would do is lower the extreme house prices and only tell the locals. Stop Londoners moving into poncy apartments and let us be able to afford a home here!

Tell me about your new album, I heart History?
AS: It’s a collection of ten songs all based on stories from Brighton Museum’s archives. I’ve picked the fruitiest, naughtiest, funniest and saddest stories I could find and turned them into songs. Each one relates directly to Brighton and is something that happened right here on our doorstep. Musically the style is new acoustic – lovelyguitars, some mandolin and fiddle, clarinet but with drums and some programming here and there. Lush harmonies and great lyrics!

Latest TV

» Brighton Lights 31

Our new programme for thelatest.tv sees Juice FM presenter Guy Lloyd investigate all manner of things. He starts off with chart-topping band The Hoosiers who were mega-successful a couple of years ago, were dropped by their major label and have become fashionably independent. Their chart-topping album cost £1 million to record, their new album £100 and we reckon it's just as good. We have exclusive footage of this new record. Guy does crazy-golfing with them, checks out their sound-check and witnesses the fans' adoration of the band at Audio in Brighton. In future shows Guy will be doing waxing, Dot Cotton, air guitar and needs your suggestions for more crazy things (or people) to do. Send to bill@thelatest.co.uk
