» Anti-arms protest

Latest 7 news
Anti-arms protesters have hit back at claims they caused a “riot” in Brighton last week. Brighton campaigning group Smash EDO organised a legal gathering on The Level and a march up Lewes Road last Wednesday to demonstrate outside the premises of ITT EDO-MBM in Home Farm Road, Moulsecoomb.

But when the crowd – estimated by the police at 350 but by Smash EDO as up to 800 – reached the factory, a conflict erupted.

Arms protest

Police later accused protesters of trespassing into the site and smashing windows.

But Smash EDO said it was officers who were heavy handed and hit peaceful campaigners with batons.

Protester Andrew Beckett, spokesman for Smash EDO, described the march as a “carnival” and said it was attended by a cross-section of the community, from mums with children to students, working people and people over 80. Read the rest of this article »

» Casey Affleck interview

Casey Affleck talks to Latest 7 about being directed by his older brother Ben in their new film Gone Baby Gone

Casey AffleckAn obvious question to start with but how was it working for your older brother?
I wish there had been some kind of ESP between us, because it would have saved us four fights a day. Unfortunately we have to vocalise our thoughts; we disagree and because we are brothers we openly disagree. So there would be quite a few times when people would be sitting around the set waiting for us to work out our disagreements. I think it actually helped in the long run because we could arrive at the same page.

» Loathing a fashion show

Sandra Omo finds out that a badly organised fashion show is best avoided

Sandra OmoI never imagined that a day would come where I would loath doing a fashion show. In fact, what I felt three days ago, even now, was beyond loathing; I virtually have no word to describe it. At one point, it was disappointment, then came anger, followed by shame – yes shame for being part of such a show, then at last came irritation; I felt irritated the whole night. Prior to now, I have heard models talk about disappointing jobs, and I have had some of those myself but when it comes to fashion shows, I was confident that no matter how bad it might have been, nothing matters once I step on the runway. However, the last show I did proved that this is so not true. I actually came close to walking out on the organisers when it got to my turn to get on the catwalk. For all I cared, I was better off not being a part of this show.

“All I could feel was hatred for the moment and regret for being there – as did the audience”

» Dani’s diary

Dani and her iPod invite you to take a musical trip around her world

Writing this column is hard at the best of times. Especially now, after so many years.

So I thought, as a little rest for me and a little treat for you I would let my favourite music do the talking. I go everywhere with my iPod. I have theme music. Some songs I play to perk me up, some to settle me down. For every important part of my life there is a song. So below is a week in my life, depicted by my favourite words said by others and timed, rather nicely, to music. Not all of it will make sense (but let’s face it, when does it ever!) I hadn’t realised what a task I had set myself when I decided to do this. More to the point, this is what happens in my head every morning on my way to work.

“Some songs I play to perk me up, some to settle me down, for every important part of my life there is a song”

» Brighton Lights 31

Our new programme for thelatest.tv sees Juice FM presenter Guy Lloyd investigate all manner of things. He starts off with chart-topping band The Hoosiers who were mega-successful a couple of years ago, were dropped by their major label and have become fashionably independent. Their chart-topping album cost £1 million to record, their new album £100 and we reckon it's just as good. We have exclusive footage of this new record. Guy does crazy-golfing with them, checks out their sound-check and witnesses the fans' adoration of the band at Audio in Brighton. In future shows Guy will be doing waxing, Dot Cotton, air guitar and needs your suggestions for more crazy things (or people) to do. Send to bill@thelatest.co.uk
