» Divine, dude

Jeff Divine photography

The 70s birthed a new generation of surfers, with a new language, new attitude and – with the advent of the short board – a new way of surfing. Staff photographer with Surfer magazine, Jeff Divine made 35 trips to the North Shore, documenting the decade of hippies, long hair, Mexican wedding shirts, bell-bottoms, Santana, Grateful Dead, Rolling Stones, hallucinogenic drugs, free love, post-Vietnam disillusioned youth, and garage-made surfboards – the pride and joy of these surfers.

Divine used the wonderfully saturated and warm Kodachrome slide film to capture the era before it dived headlong into the mainstream.

» Ring of diamonds

Bespoke jewellers Ring design and make jewellery tailored to the individual, as well as ensuring that all their gemstones are ethically sourced

RingNowadays the public are asking (and quite rightly so) about where precious stones are sourced. With the movie Blood Diamond and demonstrations by the stars at last year’s Oscars, consumers are now wondering if a girl’s best friend may be someone else’s worst enemy.

Ring is a bespoke jewellers in the heart of Brighton’s lanes that takes the issue of conflict gemstones very seriously. At Ring all the jewellery is new and is made either especially for the customer to their design, or for stock.

This means that as there is no second-hand jewellery, the origin of the stones can be traced, thus ensuring the stones are conflict-free. To make our customers feel even more secure, Ring has just launched a range of diamond engagement rings that have accompanying documentation to reassure clients that the diamond they have purchased is conflict-free.

» Brighton Lights 31

Our new programme for thelatest.tv sees Juice FM presenter Guy Lloyd investigate all manner of things. He starts off with chart-topping band The Hoosiers who were mega-successful a couple of years ago, were dropped by their major label and have become fashionably independent. Their chart-topping album cost £1 million to record, their new album £100 and we reckon it's just as good. We have exclusive footage of this new record. Guy does crazy-golfing with them, checks out their sound-check and witnesses the fans' adoration of the band at Audio in Brighton. In future shows Guy will be doing waxing, Dot Cotton, air guitar and needs your suggestions for more crazy things (or people) to do. Send to bill@thelatest.co.uk
