» Loop Festival 2008 review

Nick Alwinckle reviews this year’s Loop Festival in Brighton

From the looks of it, this second year of Brighton’s very own electronic music festival has ironed out the few teething problems from last year’s event. The stages have been opened out, with bigger tents to let more people see the bands and the first event’s evident sound problems have been eliminated. The only thing that could spoil things, then, is the acts involved.

Loop Festival 2008

Bristol rockers Turbowolf **, unfortunately, are a less than perfect band for the early afternoon, starting proceedings shakily.

Transformer

Providing big riffs and some punkish energy, their sole qualification as an electronic band is in having a keyboard player providing the odd plinky-plonk flourish, though this is disjointed and wholly separate to the main musical body.

Their songs simply aren’t strong enough to make them last in memory after the set, and things can only get better from here. Brighton boys Transformer ** are next up and have a lot on their shoulders.

Phil Mills reports on the ghosts that are said to haunt the theatres of East Sussex

A poltergeist, a smartly dressed doorman and a fragile teenage girl are reported to be haunting Brighton theatres. The dozens of ghosts treading the boards in the city are said to be friendly and do not cause any harm. Nevertheless, it is rumoured that supernatural activity at one venue has spooked staff when working alone at night.
The Corn Exchange

“The poltergeist plays naughty tricks in the ladies toilets – it has been known to flush the toilet when people have been using them!”

The Corn Exchange, one of the three sites operated by Brighton Dome, is reputed to be haunted by a poltergeist. Stories about this and other ghosts are detailed in a new book Haunted Theatres of East Sussex. Author Tina Lakin describes that the haunting has been going on for some time in the Corn Exchange building, which dates back to 1868.

Residents’ views are key to Marina master plan

Some residents are worried about the future of Brighton Marina. Writing in Latest 7, city council leader Mary Mears explains that no decisions have yet been taken – and how you can get your voice heard.
Mary Mears
I have been following closely recent discussions about Brighton Marina. As ward councillor and council leader, I know it’s an issue people feel strongly about.

Everyone wants the Marina improved. But there is not always consensus on the best approach. I am hearing three messages loud and clear from residents:
They are worried about the height of buildings there. They fear overdevelopment – the Marina turning into a massive housing estate. And people are anxious about extra traffic.

Do you want the Marina to look like this?

Residents’ views on this are vital, so the council is running an extensive consultation, gathering opinions to create a Marina master plan. Read the rest of this article »
