» Music Reviews: Dartz, Travis, Born Ruffians & more

The Sad History of the Village of AlbneriqueTeeside three-piece Dartz took a temporary sabbatical from music while trying to finish their studies at university, but the lure of making and playing is too strong. Hence, new mini-album The Sad History of the Village of Albnerique, a collection of angular, almost discordant neopop numbers reminiscent of the post-punk era but also incessantly modern. Not so many A-grade winners as on their debut but this is a consistently driven and dynamic work.

Sometimes unfairly maligned, the hugely popular Travis are popular for good reason – they write great songs, full of strong melodies and often with a pleasing melancholic undertow (my aunt had ‘Flowers in the Window’ played at her funeral). Read the rest of this article »

Victoria Nangle talks to the king of pun mister Tim Vine before his show at the Theatre Royal Brighton

Tim VineTim Vine – stand-up comedian, writer, actor, TV presenter, gameshow host, Comic Relief Fame Academy contestant and former world record holder for most jokes in an hour is coming to Brighton. He’s a busy man, and he’s just done a three-week run up at the Edinburgh Festival.

I asked him how he found Edinburgh. “Well, I’ve got SatNav,” he replies, giving me a taster of his famed punning. He is renowned for his puns, but he’s certainly no one-trick pony in his stand-up.

» Tom Murray exhibition

All together now

The Beatles
Sixties society photographer Tom Murray had the unexpected honour of photographing The Beatles while they were in the middle of making The White Album. Invited to join Don McCullin, best known for his war photography, he was to assist in the photo shoot.

From two rolls of film there are 23 surviving shots – the shoot was so last minute andhectic that this collection of images has become to be known as the Mad Day Out.

For three decades these shots were unseen, but now all 23 images are being made available, and released over three volumes, as signed limited editions of 195 each.

Tony Murray: Mad Day Out, Naked Eye Gallery, until 30 September

» Brighton Lights 31

Our new programme for thelatest.tv sees Juice FM presenter Guy Lloyd investigate all manner of things. He starts off with chart-topping band The Hoosiers who were mega-successful a couple of years ago, were dropped by their major label and have become fashionably independent. Their chart-topping album cost £1 million to record, their new album £100 and we reckon it's just as good. We have exclusive footage of this new record. Guy does crazy-golfing with them, checks out their sound-check and witnesses the fans' adoration of the band at Audio in Brighton. In future shows Guy will be doing waxing, Dot Cotton, air guitar and needs your suggestions for more crazy things (or people) to do. Send to bill@thelatest.co.uk
