About six months ago, I needed (but very much didn’t want) work, and had to produce a CV. The phrase ‘Write a CV’ can be paraphrased, quite accurately, as ‘Analyse your life, come to the conclusion that you’ve underachieved, and then try to pretend that you haven’t’.
It’s impossible not to judge yourself when remembering every academic failure, every unfinished task, every job you couldn’t bear for more than a fortnight. Writing a CV forces us into striving to remember what we’d rather forget.
