» Last Bus To Whitehawk Radio Show

Only Terry Garoghan could warm up an audience kept queuing for more than half an hour, with no bar open, so quickly. Within seconds a sold-out crowd were eating out of his hand.
Except for one Basil Fawlty-esque tirade against two bemused Germans, Terry was brilliant at interacting with the audience and they offered themselves up for public humiliation willingly.
The material was based around patter from his famous Southern FM show, which gave a warm glow of nostalgia even to those who never heard it. There were ridiculous games (“What ferry am I thinking of? Bryan Ferry”) and things Aunty Mim used to say (“If you don’t know what to do next, have a chicken sandwich”). Class.
Not highbrow, not new and the prizes were (deliberately) pants, but very very funny. If you’re not local, you won’t get it – if you are and you’ve never seen Terry live, sort it out. It’s a crying shame you can’t hear him on the radio.

» The First Domino

Killers can be charming – think Ripley, nazis charismatic – think you know who and in The First Domino writer Jonathan Cash has created a new breed, the angry racist bomber you can’t help liking played marvellously by Danny Seldon. Amazing since Cash was seriously injured in the 1999 Soho pub bomb.(see picture) Timely too as I watched a charming party political broadcast from the BNP on TV later. It’s intensely thought-provoking theatre – should we try and understand bombers? What are our preconceptions about racists? And what are theirs about us? There are lots of subtle messages, the relationship between the bomber and the prison doctor psychiatrist – expertly played by Cary Crankson – showed what a thin line there is between love and hate.

» Old Rope

The Old Rope new material format strayed a little last night, as it included Brendon Burns reading from his forthcoming book and Lady Carol giving us a uke rendition of Pearl Jam classic ‘Black’.  The night opened with Marcus Ryan and an obvious swine flu gag got things to a slow start.  Dan Evans was up next with great energy and strong new material, lovely.  Scotsman Sean Grant did his first gig outside of Scotland, a safe but enjoyable set. The highlight of the night was the eternally watchable Craig Campbell.  Such great physicality and really enjoyable riffing lifted the audience to where they wanted to be all night.

» The Erpingham Camp

Full marks for this exciting transformation of a TV script into a seaside passion play. I was hooked from the moment I arrived to the very end. The cast, all excellent, drew the audience into the whole event brilliantly. Even Orton’s sometimes clumsy and cliched political and religious snipes were delivered with conviction. The poetry of his language was certainly preserved and I left feeling elated, entertained and provoked. Dividing the audience was a truly inspired concept and I would love to go back and be in the different groups. I was happy to sing and dance and bare my knobbly knees and would recommend anyone else to do so too. Can we have them back very soon please?

» Brighton Lights 31

Our new programme for thelatest.tv sees Juice FM presenter Guy Lloyd investigate all manner of things. He starts off with chart-topping band The Hoosiers who were mega-successful a couple of years ago, were dropped by their major label and have become fashionably independent. Their chart-topping album cost £1 million to record, their new album £100 and we reckon it's just as good. We have exclusive footage of this new record. Guy does crazy-golfing with them, checks out their sound-check and witnesses the fans' adoration of the band at Audio in Brighton. In future shows Guy will be doing waxing, Dot Cotton, air guitar and needs your suggestions for more crazy things (or people) to do. Send to bill@thelatest.co.uk
