» Review of the week: Brief Encounter

It’s 1938 and Kneehigh have taken me there, to a world of threepenny bits and underskirts and bath buns where extramarital infidelity is almost unheard of and men still smoke pipes. In this ripping production ensemble is the key and it doesn’t come much better. Noël Coward’s amazing story of illicit love is staged at a breathless pace with breathtaking charm and humour. The visual effects may be hi-tech but the overall effect is cardis and cocoa, the songs heart-warming and the moral – oh to hell with morals, an evening of pure delight.
