Hot Plate

Hot Plate

Last chance to see this exhibition of printmaking in digital and traditional media, which arose out of a project initiated in Novosibirsk, Siberia, in 2009. Nine curators from around the globe have been invited to select works from some of the best contemporary printmakers in their respective countries including Belguim, Canada and Korea.

Hot Plate, Phoenix Gallery, 10–14 Waterloo Place, 01273 603700. Until 8 August

Rivans

Maria Rivans

Commenting on a world of change, beauty, diversity and mystery, Maria Rivans’ very personal collages explore ideas of existing alternate realities and fantastical other worlds. Her heavily populated cityscapes feature gigantic flora and animals within colonies of humans.

Maria Rivans, Ink_d Gallery, 96 North Road, 01273 645299. Until 22 August

Platform X(D)

Platform X is a series of short residencies, enabling artists to freely respond to the space and locale leading to a public outcome. For ‘Platform X(D)’, Samuel Dowd’s point of departure is the design of a living structure, a sculptural dwelling whose form draws on the history of artists’ retreats, visionary architecture, and self-build co-ops.

Platform X(D):Samuel Dowd, Permanent Gallery, 20 Bedford Place. 5–15 August

Paintathon

DuryA fundraising event for the Trevor Mann Baby Unit at Royal Sussex Hospital, Paintathon took place on 21 June (solstice), with Alex Drury completing 18 paintings in 18 hours, tracking the sun from dawn to dusk across Devil’s Dyke. The results are on show at the White Hart in Henfield until 10 August, before transferring to Earth & Stars pub in Brighton for the final bid night on 12 August.

Bids are invited online: info@alexduryart.co.uk, www.alexduryart.co.uk

» Brighton Lights 31

Our new programme for thelatest.tv sees Juice FM presenter Guy Lloyd investigate all manner of things. He starts off with chart-topping band The Hoosiers who were mega-successful a couple of years ago, were dropped by their major label and have become fashionably independent. Their chart-topping album cost £1 million to record, their new album £100 and we reckon it's just as good. We have exclusive footage of this new record. Guy does crazy-golfing with them, checks out their sound-check and witnesses the fans' adoration of the band at Audio in Brighton. In future shows Guy will be doing waxing, Dot Cotton, air guitar and needs your suggestions for more crazy things (or people) to do. Send to bill@thelatest.co.uk

» Artists Open Houses

AOH Special: It’s Festival time in Brighton & Hove, which means the Artists Open Houses have opened their doors for another year! Maps of all the trails can be picked up across the city. We love nothing better than browsing and buying arts and crafts, and there is so much going on throughout May that we’ve made it easier by bringing the Artists Open Houses to you! We have 11 special programmes, featuring artists in their own houses. So here’s your chance to go ‘through the keyhole’ so to speak as we visit the artists in their own environment.
