Hair raising

There’s a new Freeview channel launching this week. Really? Yes, Really. Now that we’ve got that gag out of the way, the channel is called Really and its heralding Hair Battle Spectacular as one of the major new programmes in its schedule. This is a UK premiere, but then so was The Real Housewives Of New Jersey at one point and I’m not waiting on tenterhooks for the next episode of that. The proof is in the pudding, and is hair really enough to draw attention to Really? Read the rest of this article »

Topping most comics’ must-see lists, US cutting edge funnyman Doug Stanhope talks to Victoria Nangle

VN: Regular subjects touched upon in your sets include abortion and terrorism. Are you drawn to controversial issues naturally, in terms of this is what interests you most when you pick up a paper, or do you like to court a response from the liberal audience?
DS: Controversial issues are always more interesting but I don’t create material about a subject I have opinion on just because it’s controversial. » Review: The Old Firm Casuals

Reviews, Uncategorized: August 1st, 2011

The Old Firm Casuals (as frontman Lars Frederiksen insisted they be known) performed a short humdrum set to a crowd trying in earnest to pretend they were at a good punk gig. Unfortunately the band were a cartoon parody of a punk band, with an admirable spirit and energy failing to make up for the bland music, lack of memorable songs and weak hooks. Personally, I also think that as soon as sweaty people start taking their tops off, the band should stop playing and demand a mass re-shirting. Yuck.

» Brighton Lights 31

Our new programme for thelatest.tv sees Juice FM presenter Guy Lloyd investigate all manner of things. He starts off with chart-topping band The Hoosiers who were mega-successful a couple of years ago, were dropped by their major label and have become fashionably independent. Their chart-topping album cost £1 million to record, their new album £100 and we reckon it's just as good. We have exclusive footage of this new record. Guy does crazy-golfing with them, checks out their sound-check and witnesses the fans' adoration of the band at Audio in Brighton. In future shows Guy will be doing waxing, Dot Cotton, air guitar and needs your suggestions for more crazy things (or people) to do. Send to bill@thelatest.co.uk
