» Review: Capdown + Random Hand

Reviews: August 1st, 2011

With a storming set from the high-energy trombone-led Keighley punks Random Hand, a band more than likely influenced by the headlining progenitors of ‘ska-core’, the recently reformed Capdown had a lot to live up to. Thankfully, it seems the innovative Milton Keynes lads remain as relevant as ever despite the years away from the scene they created. Bursting on stage with their trademark blend of ska and dub with furious blasts of hardcore rock, their note-perfect renditions made for an almost complete collection of fan favourites. Singer/sax-player Jake Sims-Fielding now lives in Brighton; with any luck, this might lead to an extended comeback for the strong local fanbase.

» Review: Lenny Peters: Enjoy yourself

Reviews: July 29th, 2011

This show had all the credentials for a very unusual interactive comedy experience. Style, panache, daring views on life which were intermingled with personal experiences via life so far. Lenny Peters had the audience hooked after a slow warm up to the proper material, but when he relaxed despite late audience arrivals, he had an inexplicable charm about his comedy. He’s a comic to really watch out for as he’s down to earth and really tells things like they are.

» Review: James Acaster: Amongst Other Things

Reviews: July 29th, 2011

From the start, James Acaster had every single member of the audience laughing until they cried. One lady he pinpointed even said that her jaw was aching from the laughter! This is a comic who is set to rock Edinburgh with his original style which obviously takes inspiration from people such as Rowan Atkinson and Hugh Laurie. Highlights involved hiding, friends, skydiving and a bear his mother knitted to replace him when he moved away. His unique and brash technique really made even the most subtle action hysterical, plus his quick witted timing when heckles occurred highlighted the skill this man has to offer.

» Review: The Drifters

Reviews: July 29th, 2011

Considering The Drifters have been going since 1953 and have had 60 different vocalists, don’t be surprised not to see an original member. The rolling conveyor belt of line-ups are based on certain core criterias; an ability to sing in harmony, an ability to do a cheesy little shoe shuffle during songs and lots of smiling. Thankfully the latest incarnation has all three in abundance. Moving through their varied and extensive back catalogue (plus selected solo highlights from the more famous individual members like Ben E. King) with professional ease, it was a slick and effortless performance. Top notch.

» Brighton Lights 31

Our new programme for thelatest.tv sees Juice FM presenter Guy Lloyd investigate all manner of things. He starts off with chart-topping band The Hoosiers who were mega-successful a couple of years ago, were dropped by their major label and have become fashionably independent. Their chart-topping album cost £1 million to record, their new album £100 and we reckon it's just as good. We have exclusive footage of this new record. Guy does crazy-golfing with them, checks out their sound-check and witnesses the fans' adoration of the band at Audio in Brighton. In future shows Guy will be doing waxing, Dot Cotton, air guitar and needs your suggestions for more crazy things (or people) to do. Send to bill@thelatest.co.uk
