Andrew Kay's food & drink, Features: July 12th, 2011

Andrew Kay hands over his official napkin and notepad to a bunch of talented youngsters for our annual Children’s Food Reviews

Yes, it’s that time again when I rally the kids and send them off to write about meals in restaurants. And this year it is the biggest expedition ever with 14 youngsters between the ages of 5 and 16 having been out to report on our widest ever range of local eateries.

As you will see, some went with mum and dad and some went with a friend, all depending on how old they were and, of course, whether mum and dad could trust them! The great thing is that I could certainly trust that they would report back honestly. Not everyone liked everything but on the whole their responses are positive and in some cases positively glowing.

Celebcity: July 12th, 2011

It was the ‘Perfect Night’ for Peter Andre at Fontwell Racecourse on 2 July as he performed under the summer sky. Julie Coates, of The Lanes Health and Beauty salon, was lucky enough to be there and hailed our local entertainer as “the ultimate showman.”

“This performance was in a different league for Pete,” she enthused. “I have seen him perform brilliantly before, but on Saturday he really was at the top of his game.” No doubt Pete will be keen to recreate the magic during his headline slot at Guilfest later this month.

Peter was joined by X-Factor boy band The Reason 4, and live pop act Paradise Point, whose bass player – Roman Kemp – is said to be a dead-ringer for his famous father Martin. But ultimately the night belonged to our Aussie-born heartthrob. Ending the show with his biggest hit, ‘Mysterious Girl’, Peter sang covers alongside his own work to ensure that the concert was a real crowd pleaser. “He really didn’t disappoint,” concluded Julie. Although a few fans have since expressed regret at the no-show of his famous six-pack; some people are never satisfied!

Mad Matt: July 12th, 2011

Matt Whistler paddles with danger

The annual Paddle Round The Pier event (3 July) provided the perfect setting for Matt’s latest challenge. The brief from iconic local painter Mervin Etienne (AKA Artistmerv) was simple: find a boat and paddle it around the old West Pier to claim victory in the Paddle’s main event.

Part one proved simple enough as Matt was able to buy a boat from fellow comedian Dave Thompson for £20, but the name didn’t exactly fill him with confidence.
“I took my travelling vessel back to my house only to realise its moniker challenged fisherman’s superstitions – it was called The Clown Of Death.

Tasha Dhanraj commutes to London

I am very happily writing this column from the comfort of my own bed. This time last week I was commuting to London to join the busy world of actual work… luckily for only two weeks. Despite it being barely a month since I finished my exams, I had happily slipped into the blissful and unhealthy pattern of staying awake until every last episode of Family Guy and American Dad on both BBC Three and FX had finished, then waking up whenever my cats got so hungry they started gnawing through my bedroom door. Our new programme for thelatest.tv sees Juice FM presenter Guy Lloyd investigate all manner of things. He starts off with chart-topping band The Hoosiers who were mega-successful a couple of years ago, were dropped by their major label and have become fashionably independent. Their chart-topping album cost £1 million to record, their new album £100 and we reckon it's just as good. We have exclusive footage of this new record. Guy does crazy-golfing with them, checks out their sound-check and witnesses the fans' adoration of the band at Audio in Brighton. In future shows Guy will be doing waxing, Dot Cotton, air guitar and needs your suggestions for more crazy things (or people) to do. Send to bill@thelatest.co.uk
