Latest 7 chats to Jonathan Harries, owner of Shine Hair & Beauty Salon in Brighton

When did you become interested in hairdressing?
“At the age of 15 my sister took me to a really great salon in London’s West End and said that while she was having her hair done, I could get my ‘mullet’ trimmed. The guy that cut my hair seemed to absolutely love his job and as I had no vision of what I would want to do when I left school, I pretty much decided then that I wanted to become a hairdresser. I then started an apprenticeship with Akin Konizi [British Hairdresser of the Year 2008 and 2009].”

What’s the best and hardest part of owning a salon?
“Other than VAT, I’d probably say that one of the hardest things is making sure that the people I work with are happy, otherwise everything else in the salon becomes pointless if they’re not happy with what they are doing. The best thing about owning a salon is being able to make decisions that please everyone without going through a head office or a giant HR department.”

Mad Matt: June 28th, 2011

Matt Whistler has a need for speed – of mooching

The last 20 years has seen many innovations in the art of communicating, back in the ’80s no-one had even heard of email, BBM or Twitter and people actually used fax machines.

After a few initial attempts that included shouting through street cones and stamping with one foot while throwing bags of feathers coated in glitter, Matt decided to stick to a more simplistic approach.

What to do in the summer months when the football season ends? With the incessant speculation on the next big transfer or managerial appointment, you could argue that the football season never goes away. However, there is another national sport that offers a very pleasurable alternative to twiddling your thumbs waiting for the football season to start.

» Review: Five Blue Haired Ladies Sitting On A Green Park Bench

Reviews: June 28th, 2011

Although labelled as a comedy, ‘Five Ladies…’ is a little bit more than that. As the ladies chat whilst sitting on their favourite park bench, we learn about their lives, loves, secrets and feelings for each other. The plots run from divorce and infidelity to religion and cupping Sammy Davis Jnr’s genitalia.  As you would imagine the central roles are very strong characters and performed to a high standard. The extended cast, which ‘appear’ in the second half, keep the levels up and round off the personal back stories well. It was a very pleasant, entertaining piece of theatre.

» Brighton Lights 31

Our new programme for thelatest.tv sees Juice FM presenter Guy Lloyd investigate all manner of things. He starts off with chart-topping band The Hoosiers who were mega-successful a couple of years ago, were dropped by their major label and have become fashionably independent. Their chart-topping album cost £1 million to record, their new album £100 and we reckon it's just as good. We have exclusive footage of this new record. Guy does crazy-golfing with them, checks out their sound-check and witnesses the fans' adoration of the band at Audio in Brighton. In future shows Guy will be doing waxing, Dot Cotton, air guitar and needs your suggestions for more crazy things (or people) to do. Send to bill@thelatest.co.uk
