Andrew Kay's food & drink: November 29th, 2011

Andrew Kay gets a good talking to at The Swan in Kemp Town

As a new resident of Sussex Square Mr R and I are gradually getting our bearings and finding where and where not to go. Lidl is up there and unlike some I shop there without wearing a Hermés headscarf and Jackie O’s. I also like Mama’s Café in Whitehawk where the breakfasts are excellent.

But top of our list right now are Hudson and Bridges at 237 Eastern Road which we gravitated to whilst moving for coffees and light lunches and The Swan which is owned and run by the same team. You might remember that I reviewed the Swan a while back and gave it top marks for simple food served well in stylish surroundings for an affordable price. And since then we have returned and had equally good food, still sensibly affordable and great wine at decent prices too. They seem to have grasped the fact that in times of recession we are all tightening our belts, well at least those of us who can tighten our belts, I have run out of belt to tighten of late.

Last week we went along to a special event at The Swan, the sixth in a series of supper talks aptly titled Up Your Street, hosted by Chris and Gary and delivered by the lovely Rose Collis, she of The New Encyclopaedia Of Brighton, an excellent tome on the history of our great city full of facts and fun too. Reviews: November 29th, 2011

A big band, a big venue (for Brighton) and they did great. Tough and punchy but not without a couple of weak moments in the middle, they played a generous mix of old and new material. The crowd was lively and energetic singing along with all the big hits, and the band handled this well, interacting with us to maximum effect. If I had one criticism it would be that lead singer Tom Meighan is starting to look like he’s styled himself on Bono – not removing his sunglasses throughout the set. Although this was counteracted by band mate Sergio Pizzorno who appeared to have an owl in the hood of his parka. How rock & roll. Unsurprisingly, they saved the anthemic 2009 hit ‘Fire’ for the finale, when everyone in there (balconies included) got on their feet, hands in the air and blew the roof off the Brighton Centre. A fantastic evening and a great start to their UK tour.

Ho! Ho! Ho!

DVDs are big business this Christmas. Whether it’s the box set of Frozen Planet or spreading the word of The Wire (again), they have always been a source of big present-buying and gathering around the goggle box as a family, friendship group or simply random Boxing Day gathering. This year, more than ever before, there is a barrage of stand-up comedy DVDs. Solo shows, more club sets than you’d catch on the Michael McIntyre Roadshow, but carefully crafted shows around a theme or singular sense of humour. To be shared. It’s a cliché for a reason –?there really is something for everyone. Are you sitting comfortably? Then let us begin…

Right, let’s kick off against the myth that there could not possibly be a DVD you could give to Granny that you’ll find funny, will not offend the in-laws and is still suitable for the toddlers running around and won’t teach them any bad words. Let me introduce you to Milton Jones. Read the rest of this article »

» Brighton Lights 31

Our new programme for thelatest.tv sees Juice FM presenter Guy Lloyd investigate all manner of things. He starts off with chart-topping band The Hoosiers who were mega-successful a couple of years ago, were dropped by their major label and have become fashionably independent. Their chart-topping album cost £1 million to record, their new album £100 and we reckon it's just as good. We have exclusive footage of this new record. Guy does crazy-golfing with them, checks out their sound-check and witnesses the fans' adoration of the band at Audio in Brighton. In future shows Guy will be doing waxing, Dot Cotton, air guitar and needs your suggestions for more crazy things (or people) to do. Send to bill@thelatest.co.uk
