» Events: Brighton and Hove’s White Night Festival 2011

Events: October 25th, 2011

When anarchy and creativity take over a city and it blossoms into this

There’s no better way to celebrate the changing of the clocks this weekend than with the twilight spectacle that is White Night Festival. The arty community of Brighton is coming together again for the nocturnal event, with a variety of bizarre things to do during the middle of the night. This year’s theme Utopia sees more than 70 separate events spread across the city.

The Old Steine Gardens is holding an alternative village fete, with stages and stalls featuring deco tea rooms, swing dancing, vintage glamour makeovers, midnight rituals and food flinging Olympics. Expect ghouls, kitsch popstars and rocka-hillbillies!
Boogaloo Stu’s Pop Magic wants you to collectively write, record and a produce a pop single and lip-synched video, alongside a flashmob dance routine. The finished video will be online within hours. The Boat Project will be held in the gardens too, where you can design your own boat, build and race it, without stepping off dry land.

White Night’s sister festival is Nuit Blanche Amiens in France and local musicians L’Arrache will blend modern music, traditional influences and a theatrical performance on Walkabout, West Street.

With Halloween just around the corner, the festival proves the right atmosphere for Stories from the Churchyard, at St Nicholas Church. Watch as the dead and buried inhabitants come back to tell their real life and death stories in the amazing setting.

Nordic Giants will give a very special finale at 6am on Hove Bandstand. Their cinematic performance, with a reel of short films and live music is uplifting and haunting. The duo will herald the new day’s sun and give an ethereal farewell to the night. With so much to see and do, you’ll definitely be in need of that extra hour.

Shine: October 25th, 2011

Shine Hair & Beauty has all you need for a top to toe makeover, including the perfect hair style, finds Zara Baker

When I first met Jonathan Harries, owner of Shine Hair & Beauty, he said that to find the right cut for his clients, he wanted to know the style you didn’t want: “What look would make you cry?”. It’s an effective approach as we often go to the hairdresser brimming with ideas and armed with magazine pictures (“this length, that fringe, those layers”…) but we can be unsure how the look would work overall.

Film: October 25th, 2011

Director: Tate Taylor

It’s always tough going when change is about. It’s also exciting, invigorating and sometimes quite scary – and this change we are talking about is on a national sociological level. However, as it happened 50 years ago there appears to be another distance for this film to be uplifting without being too socially challenging itself. This is Disney’s release you know.

Andrew Kay's food & drink: October 25th, 2011

Andrew Kay gets his prescription filled at The Medicine Chest in Hove

Tucked snuggly just off Western Road you will find The Medicine Chest. It’s a building with a history. In recent years it has been a vegetarian restaurant and venue and in the past a church of sorts. Now it is a bar and restaurant that neither preaches the word of God or a meat-free lifestyle. It’s taken me rather a long time to get there and, now I have been, I regret my tardy behaviour. I was unsure what to expect. From the outside little is given away, the outward appearance giving the impression of a Victorian illusionists prop. Read the rest of this article »

» Brighton Lights 31

Our new programme for thelatest.tv sees Juice FM presenter Guy Lloyd investigate all manner of things. He starts off with chart-topping band The Hoosiers who were mega-successful a couple of years ago, were dropped by their major label and have become fashionably independent. Their chart-topping album cost £1 million to record, their new album £100 and we reckon it's just as good. We have exclusive footage of this new record. Guy does crazy-golfing with them, checks out their sound-check and witnesses the fans' adoration of the band at Audio in Brighton. In future shows Guy will be doing waxing, Dot Cotton, air guitar and needs your suggestions for more crazy things (or people) to do. Send to bill@thelatest.co.uk
