» Out For A Duck – The Restaurant At Drake’s Hotel

Andrew Kay samples the culinary delights of The Restaurant At Drake’s Hotel

If you are a regular reader you will have noticed that I have spent quite a lot of this year travelling to the Netherlands. To say that I have fallen for Holland is an understatement, I am somewhat besotted. In fact, in a few weeks time you be able to read of my latest Latest outing, this time to the medieval city of Utrecht, but more of that later.

Part of my Dutch diversions relate to an exciting new project that I am embarking on in association with the Brighton & Hove Food & Drink Festival. Whilst in Maastricht and staying at the Beaumont hotel I had one of the best meals I have had in many, many years. I was dining alone and I really wanted to be able to share the food with someone. It was right there that I had an idea. What if I could persuade the hotel in Maastricht to swap chefs with one based in Brighton. Then I could not only tell you about Audrey but tell you that you would be able sample her fine cooking right here in Brighton. Read the rest of this article »

» Ice gems – Feast

Andrew Kay previews this year’s Royal Pavilion Ice Rink restaurant Feast

It hardly seems a moment since we all moaned about the lousy summer weather and now we are all bracing ourselves for the cold and looking forward to a white Christmas. Nothing looked prettier last Christmas than the spectacle of the ice rink at The Royal Pavilion. With the palace lit up and the ice filled with its soft reflections it had never looked more beautiful.

This season it returns and with it a new food offer entitled Feast. Given the shortness of the season I thought it would be a good idea to travel up to Shoreditch and the Worship Street Whistle Stop where they were able to provide me with a taste of things to come. Read the rest of this article »

» Sing For You Supper – Gars

Andrew Kay keeps on singing at Gars

Everybody needs to find their inner karaoke number. I have several now and woe betide anyone who gazzumps me. But, I’m getting ahead of myself. Why karaoke? This is my food page after all.

Let me explain. A few weeks ago I gathered a small group of my colleagues together and off we went to Gars for a very early Christmas party. We have been to Gars for the Latest Christmas celebration several times and in a straw poll it comes out tops with all our staff. Read the rest of this article »

» Going For A Song – Carluccio’s

Andrew Kay enjoys Opera A Tavola at Carluccio’s

If I’m perfectly honest, over the years my experiences of dinners with entertainment have not been good. Sometimes good food with bad entertainment, sometimes good entertainment with bad food and sometimes bad food and bad entertainment. So, as you can imagine, I was fairly nervous about Opera A Tavola. Not that I was worried about the food at Carluccio’s, I eat there often and love it. No, it was the singing that had me worried.

I arrived to find a rather nice drinks reception with excellent nibbles, mountains of crisp whitebait and little chicken pieces with ham and sage went down well with quality chilled Prosecco. My guest for the evening was Dr W, who arrived a few minutes later, but soon entered into the general conversation that would be key to the whole evening. I liked that we mingled to start and loved the fact that there were some familiar faces in the crowd. Read the rest of this article »

Latest TV

» Brighton Lights 31

Our new programme for thelatest.tv sees Juice FM presenter Guy Lloyd investigate all manner of things. He starts off with chart-topping band The Hoosiers who were mega-successful a couple of years ago, were dropped by their major label and have become fashionably independent. Their chart-topping album cost £1 million to record, their new album £100 and we reckon it's just as good. We have exclusive footage of this new record. Guy does crazy-golfing with them, checks out their sound-check and witnesses the fans' adoration of the band at Audio in Brighton. In future shows Guy will be doing waxing, Dot Cotton, air guitar and needs your suggestions for more crazy things (or people) to do. Send to bill@thelatest.co.uk
