» Doctor’s orders: The Medicine Chest

Andrew Kay gets his prescription filled at The Medicine Chest in Hove

Tucked snuggly just off Western Road you will find The Medicine Chest. It’s a building with a history. In recent years it has been a vegetarian restaurant and venue and in the past a church of sorts. Now it is a bar and restaurant that neither preaches the word of God or a meat-free lifestyle. It’s taken me rather a long time to get there and, now I have been, I regret my tardy behaviour. I was unsure what to expect. From the outside little is given away, the outward appearance giving the impression of a Victorian illusionists prop. Read the rest of this article »

» Foodies final

Andrew Kay has been presenting the Brighton & Hove Foodie awards at Pub du Vin

The winners of Brighton & Hove Foodie Awards 2011, chosen by 5,000 public votes, received their trophies from myself and Juice FM DJ Andrea Fox at the Dome Room at Pub du Vin, which was the grand finale of the city’s September Food Festival.
Vegetarians won the day, with restaurant Terre à Terre in East Street retaining its position as the city’s favourite restaurant, taking first place as Best Restaurant 2011. The Chilli Pickle, which recently expanded into MyHotel overlooking Jubilee Square, came second, with another curry favourite, Indian Summer in East Street, claimed third. Andrew Kay returns to his Maastricht trip and dinners at Beaumont and Witloof

Maastricht made a huge impression on me but none better than the exemplary hospitality at Hotel Beaumont, where I had one of those meals that will live on in my mind for many years to come.

Beaumont has been independent and in the care of the same family since it opened in 1912, which will make next year its 100th anniversary. I met with the current owner, Harrie Beaumont, entrusted with the family legacy, his passion for the hotel and for the rest of his family is abundantly obvious. In recent years they have re-styled the entire concept and brought it up to a truly international standard, but not at the expense of charm, which it has in abundance. » It’s A Breeze

Andrew Kay finds that the kitchen at Breeze is cooking up a storm

Just a few weeks back we had a Q&A with the owner of Breeze in Trafalgar Street. After a long history of running a restaurant in Hove, he has upped sticks and found new premises in the North Laine. The North Laine is pretty well served with pubs that do food but there are very few restaurants so Breeze is a very welcome addition. Read the rest of this article »

Latest TV

» Brighton Lights 31

Our new programme for thelatest.tv sees Juice FM presenter Guy Lloyd investigate all manner of things. He starts off with chart-topping band The Hoosiers who were mega-successful a couple of years ago, were dropped by their major label and have become fashionably independent. Their chart-topping album cost £1 million to record, their new album £100 and we reckon it's just as good. We have exclusive footage of this new record. Guy does crazy-golfing with them, checks out their sound-check and witnesses the fans' adoration of the band at Audio in Brighton. In future shows Guy will be doing waxing, Dot Cotton, air guitar and needs your suggestions for more crazy things (or people) to do. Send to bill@thelatest.co.uk
