Andrew Kay goes to The Bull in Ditchling for a spot of lunch

It was a hot Friday and I had spent more than enough time sitting in traffic trying to get to the South Of England Show at Ardingley. It was a launch pad for the Sussex Food Awards, an initiative that I wholeheartedly support and one that I urge you all to get behind too. It’s only by talking about and supporting local food producers and retailers that we can, collectively, start to change the way people shop for food. Read the rest of this article »

Andrew Kay has his faith restored in the Ram Inn at Firle

Ah, the joys of Sussex in May. Or not as it happens. No sooner had the Brighton Festival started when the freakish hot spell abated and we descended into a week of wind and drizzle. Of course, I shouldn’t complain as the gardens and fields are now all a lush green, as is my drive, where poppies are breaking through the fine layer of badly laid concrete. Andrew Kay visits The Thistle Hotel and finds a chef from The Savoy has turned things around

When I first came to live in Brighton The Thistle Hotel was called The Ramada and had a very fine restaurant called La Noblesse. It was posh – very posh – all shiny silverware, glinting crystal and suited waiters. The food was good too, French of course, and pretty in that 1980s way that we loved so much. Then one day it was all gone. Simply shut, doors closed and left unused, and it was that way for some time before they changed the space and opened a cocktail bar.By that point it was a Thistle Hotel but, to be honest, I had very little knowledge of what kind of food they offered – wrong of me I know. I sort of guessed that they had retained the coffee shop and from there served breakfasts. Read the rest of this article »

Andrew Kay finds food worthy of a name at (no name)… in Brighton’s Kemp Town

Wednesday was not a good day. Several meetings ran late, a client kept me waiting for over 30 minutes and I witnessed a sort of ‘gunfight at the OK Corral’ scenario between two rival businessmen, which could have been funny but was just embarrassing. Fortunately, one behaved with impeccable dignity and refused to allow me to be drawn into the argument. By 3pm, I was back in the Skoda and suddenly gripped with intense bellyache. I needed to get home and I needed to get there fast. It was not a good moment as I had a table booked for dinner with my old mucka Mazza. Fortunately, it was a passing thing and by the evening I was well enough to head into Kemp Town and (no name)… Read the rest of this article »

» Brighton Lights 31

Our new programme for thelatest.tv sees Juice FM presenter Guy Lloyd investigate all manner of things. He starts off with chart-topping band The Hoosiers who were mega-successful a couple of years ago, were dropped by their major label and have become fashionably independent. Their chart-topping album cost £1 million to record, their new album £100 and we reckon it's just as good. We have exclusive footage of this new record. Guy does crazy-golfing with them, checks out their sound-check and witnesses the fans' adoration of the band at Audio in Brighton. In future shows Guy will be doing waxing, Dot Cotton, air guitar and needs your suggestions for more crazy things (or people) to do. Send to bill@thelatest.co.uk
