» The devil’s cellar

Andrew Kay enjoys Poppy’s fabulous food and Casillero del Diablo wines in Kemp Town

I cannot remember when it was, or if it was the first, but I was certainly among the first people to open a pop-up restaurant in Brighton. Not that we called it that. Bill Smith, the boss, had staged Brighton’s smallest concerts in his sitting room one festival and after, challenged me to do something similar. The following year I hosted nine dinners in my Preston Street flat for eight people each time. It was exhausting but fun and I met lots of lovely people, some of them readers of this column.

Now pop-up restaurants are the norm, supper clubs de rigeur, being a foodie is almost an essential qualification in Brighton. If there were border controls in Preston Park, it would be one of the requirements for entry. Read the rest of this article »

» Rotterdam – Going Dutch

Andrew Kay takes the Eurostar to Rotterdam for a weekend of food and carnival fun

My first trip to Rotterdam a few years back was such a whistle-stop affair that I barely had time to breathe let alone eat. I left with no impression of the city, mostly rebuilt after the ravages of World War Two bombing. Which is sad, because on my return I discovered it to be a city with much to offer. » Rib-tickler – BBQ Shack at The World’s End

Andrew Kay gets very sticky at BBQ Shack at The World’s End pub in Brighton

Monday, 7.15am and my inbox goes ping. It’s an email from Mr Clifford, a friend in London who works in PR. “Have you seen Jay Rayner in The Observer?” Well, I hadn’t. I managed to wean myself off the mountainous Sunday papers a few years ago when I discovered that I had a life. Of course, I immediately logged onto the website to see what he had seen and there I found it, a review of a Brighton pub just minutes from my desk here in Latest Towers.

The pub in question is The World’s End in London Road, which also has a very convenient entrance on Providence Place. I will freely admit that it’s not a pub that I have used more than once or twice. Despite them doing food I seldom want to drink at lunchtimes in the week. Read the rest of this article »

» The Gallivant – Life’s a beach

Andrew Kay returns to The Gallivant at Camber Sands for an overnight stay

Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside. Oh, I know, I live by the seaside, but it’s pebbles and I like sand. Camber has sand, hence its full name. It also has The Gallivant so that’s two reasons to go.

I collected Mr R from Eastbourne on route and by 6.45pm we had checked into our cosy room with a very deliciously comfortable bed and headed to the bar and a much welcome pint. The beer from Chapel Down may cost a pretty penny but it’s so delicious that I didn’t mind. Sadly the weather was windy, light to moderate with showers. We braved the decking for a while but gave up in the end and came in. Read the rest of this article »

Latest TV

» Brighton Lights 31

Our new programme for thelatest.tv sees Juice FM presenter Guy Lloyd investigate all manner of things. He starts off with chart-topping band The Hoosiers who were mega-successful a couple of years ago, were dropped by their major label and have become fashionably independent. Their chart-topping album cost £1 million to record, their new album £100 and we reckon it's just as good. We have exclusive footage of this new record. Guy does crazy-golfing with them, checks out their sound-check and witnesses the fans' adoration of the band at Audio in Brighton. In future shows Guy will be doing waxing, Dot Cotton, air guitar and needs your suggestions for more crazy things (or people) to do. Send to bill@thelatest.co.uk
