» 90 Degrees Hairdressing: ethical hair

Hairdressing with a conscience is the main agenda at 90 Degrees Hairdressing

At Brighton salon 90 Degrees, products from the Australian haircare brand Kevin Murphy line the window. But this isn’t just to attract passers by. Martin and Joseph of 90 Degrees are passionate about the philosophy behind the organic range and so introduced it into the salon. The Kevin Murphy range is packed with antioxidants and are free from toxins and parabens. After all, as a consumer we opt for organic foods and natural skincare products, so why not choose products that are good for the hair and for the environment at the same time? Hair doesn’t have to be worked into a rich lather for it to be squeaky clean. Organic products tend not to foam, but the result is still gorgeous, beautiful hair.

Another belief is that we need hair colours packed with synthetic ingredients for the result to be vibrant and longlasting. Martin and Joseph have selected the plant-based Colour Herbe range for their salon, knowing the results are still phenomenal. Clients at 90 Degrees are given a bespoke service that will always begin with a detailed consultation.

The intimate salon is the perfect relaxed setting to enjoy being pampered. Martin and Joseph bring a wealth of knowledge and experience and, together with a popular organic haircare brand, give clients the best possible hair day.

Win! Fairly Covered – FairTrade Duvet Covers

We have an amazing prize to help keep you warm at night – perfect for
the longer dark evenings and cold winter months ahead. Fairly Covered is a not-for-profit company based in Brighton selling gorgeous bedding. The company is run by Christine Gent who works directly with weavers in Bangladesh. The attention to detail and quality of these products are phenomenal – the duvet covers even come finished with coconut buttons made by Thanapara Swallows, a development NGO based in Bangladesh. Dyes are free from harmful chemicals and all cloth is hand-dyed and hand-woven or hand-embroidered. All duvets have matching pillowcases. Wave has teamed up with Fairly Covered to offer one lucky reader the chance to win a duvet cover and two pillowcases of your choice. Log onto the website www.fairlycovered.com, choose the duvet size and colour (we’re loving the Hot Pink and Autumn Tiger duvet!) and email your selection to us, along with your contact details and the answer to the following question: What is the name given to two single beds on top of each other, traditionally found in a shared children’s bedroom?

Email your answer to competitions@thelatest.co.uk with ‘Fairly Covered’ in the subject box. Don’t forget to leave your name and contact details. Closing date for entries: Tuesday 29 November

Win! ChapSticks – Chapped lips?

A must-have product this season is the ChapStick – guys, that goes for you, too. Harsh winter weather and dry air from the central heating will leave you lips looking less than luscious. For dry, chapped and sore lips, the ChapStick classic range is a staple for the months ahead. Try the original ChapStick SPF 10, or the gorgeous flavours of apple, strawberry or cherry. For winter, we’re loving the ChapStick Medicated, which has cooling menthol and moisturising cocoa butter.

Wave has four sets of ChapSticks to give away to lucky readers, featuring all four products in the range. For the chance to win, just tell us: Which star sang about kissing a girl and liking the taste of her cherry ChapStick?

Beet it!

Never underestimate the power of the beet! Beetroot, that is, and something we can’t get enough of at the moment. But if you can’t face eating the stuff (is it the Marmite of the veg world?) or you simply overlook it, then you can now get your dose in capsule form. The first beetroot capsule has launched from Power Health, containing all the key nutrients of beetroot juice including magnesium, potassium and nitrate – which is known for reducing blood pressure. It’s time to reach for the red stuff! Available from all good health stores and www.powerhealth.co.uk, £3.99 for 30 capsules.

Halloween make-up

This Halloween it’s okay to go the whole hog: costume shop, garish mask or over the top make-up… but if, ladies, you see Halloween as a night to be sexy and seductive (more than usual), then look no further than the Jemma Kidd make-up range. For dramatic cat eyes, pale skin and blood red lips, seek out the I-Tech Liquid Liner, On Set Mattifying Powder and Air Kiss Shine Lipgloss. What’s more, they come with handy application instructions, ensuring the end results are a true masterpiece.

» Shine Hair & Beauty: Colour Code

This month, Shine Hair & Beauty gives the lowdown on this season’s ultra rich hair colour

Autumn is all about being bold and confident with your hair colour: think platinum white, copper red, strawberry blonde and chocolate brown…

I want to change my hair colour but don’t know where to start. How do I know what will suit me and my lifestyle?

People decide to change the colour of their hair for many reasons, from the amount it costs to maintain a colour, to purely as a fashion statement. Colour can be dramatic and often noticed far more than a haircut, and a good stylist will be able to advise you on the best tones to suit you. One of the first things to think about is whether you want to cover any grey as this will dictate whether you opt for partial or complete coverage. If you require complete coverage, you are making a commitment to colouring your hair on a regular basis. With partial coverage, you can get away with every two to three months.

This month, the team at Shine Hair & Beauty find the right haircut to suit your face shape

Your face shape is the starting point for achieving a great hairstyle that suits you. If you’re not sure of your face shape, please call in and we’ll be happy to advise you.

Square Face
A broad forehead and a strong jawline usually dominate, so go for long wispy layers and soft waves to slim down the widest areas and re-balance your face. Avoid chin length styles as they tend to accentuate square shapes.

Round Face
If you have full cheeks the wrong cut can make your face appear chubby. Avoid styles pulled off the face and opt instead for feathered or layered hair that falls onto your neck line. You can also try cropped styles to give your face more definition.

Long Face
Long faces suit most styles but they should all have body to stop the face being dragged down. Full fringes work well.

Oval Face
Oval faces generally have a narrow forehead, wide cheek bones and a small chin. This shape has perfectly proportioned and balanced features. So be daring: any short or long hairstyle should suit you.

At Shine, they don’t charge for a chat, so feel free to call in for more detailed advice. Shine Hair And Beauty, 111 Gloucester Road, Brighton, BN1 4AF, 01273 604404, salon@shinehairgroup.com, www.shinehairgroup.com

Latest TV

» Brighton Lights 31

Our new programme for thelatest.tv sees Juice FM presenter Guy Lloyd investigate all manner of things. He starts off with chart-topping band The Hoosiers who were mega-successful a couple of years ago, were dropped by their major label and have become fashionably independent. Their chart-topping album cost £1 million to record, their new album £100 and we reckon it's just as good. We have exclusive footage of this new record. Guy does crazy-golfing with them, checks out their sound-check and witnesses the fans' adoration of the band at Audio in Brighton. In future shows Guy will be doing waxing, Dot Cotton, air guitar and needs your suggestions for more crazy things (or people) to do. Send to bill@thelatest.co.uk
