» Making a crisis out of a comedy drama

Victoria Nangle is finding days off sick are not good for your comedy health and has some tips for scriptwriters…

Whenever I end up watching daytime TV soap Doctors it’s generally because I’ve had to see the doctor. A small irony in life. Another was added on to it, as I coughed and spluttered through my dressing gown hood, when the storyline I caught myself watching featured a stand-up comedian character who takes the gamble and goes out to do a university gig, while still infectious with the chicken pox. This is all despite the pleas of his girlfriend. Halfway through his set he saw the error of his ways and declared his troth to the aforementioned girlfriend, stepping out of his stage persona and walking off stage and out the door, arm in arm with his one true love. Ah. And then as a postscript he gets a call on his answer machine saying that there was a big agent in who loved his new persona and could he do loads more gigs. Happy ever after, right? No!

» Is comedy child’s play?

Victoria Nangle looks at the different challenges faced by comedians who dare to step into the bear pit of kids’ comedy

Kids’ comedy is a tough gig. Ever tried making a child laugh without a parental warm-up? Kids are brutal. They can smell desperation a mile off. And they know exactly what it is. An adult audience has grown into its own insecurities so takes a while to be sure of just how desperate the comic is. Kids have a naïve certainty and an absolute confidence in an adult to do exactly what they say they’re going to do on the tin. If it doesn’t match completely with the trade description you’ll know about it in quick time.

» Dan Antopolski interview

Victoria Nangle chats to dapper dad and comedian Dan Antopolski about why he likes comedy and not acting.

Dan Antopolski is a lovely fellow. He’s in his office for the specific reason of having a conversation with me, taking a break from appearing in the odd bit of TV (Hyperdrive, Comedy Cuts) and touring his successful 2008 show ‘Penetrating Gaze’. He starts by thanking me for a favourable review I wrote of him a few months back. Quelle gent. But down to brass tacks, what’s the show like, I ask him?
