» Looking forward to festivals

Victoria Nangle finds it hot in the city and is looking forward to the new breed of comedy festivals this summer

To quote the legendary Cole Porter: “It’s too darn hot!” Once you’ve finished sweltering in the office all day the last thing any of us want to do is go on down to a pokey little basement club, large arena venue or medium-sized theatre to endure more of the stuffiness. Whether you’re on or off the stage, the problem is the same for us all.

“Catching more punchlines flying than you’d find out on an evening with Groucho Marx and Joan Rivers”

» Traditional comedy

Victoria Nangle finds that, increasingly, what will make you laugh on stage won’t be traditional stand-up

You know what’s great about laughter? It can come from the most unlikely of places. I love a good set-up-and-punch gag as much as the next gal; the carefully crafted joke without an extra word to spare – it’s a work of art. But there is something else that you can find on the comedy circuits which people are either loving or hating, and I have no name for it. » My favourite comedian

Victoria Nangle is finding it extremely difficult to pick her favourite comic – and with good reason

Someone asked me the other day who my favourite comic was. That stumped me. It’s like trying to pick your favourite album of all time or number one book. It wasn’t even someone I knew that well, not withstanding their kindly gesture of a shared cab, and next thing I know I’m scratching my head going: “Jim Jeffries – no, Eddie Izzard, – no, Tommy Tiernan…” I’m still no closer to knowing. And with no personal point of reference they were completely unable to help me in my quest.

“There’s also the fact that in very real terms, comics are only as good as their last gig”

» Edinburgh or bust

Victoria Nangle considers delving into the comedy gold mine that is the Edinburgh Festival

I’ve been contemplating getting myself a gig or two up in Edinburgh this August Festival time – feeling the fear and doing it anyway. With friends of mine already honing their shows and thinking of catchy names to draw in the spoilt and heavily-indulged audiences that get to pad around the Scottish capital, it’s starting to press down on me.

“Brightonian comics great and small are getting their shows in fighting shape right now”

I don’t think I’d like to put together a full show of 20 minutes or so. Organising the venue, dates, accommodation, travel and publicity in one of the most over-saturated entertainment markets on the world is not my idea of a holiday. But a couple of open spots will suit me down to the ground, even if they do kick off at half past two in the morning. Read the rest of this article »
