Saturday night variety, stalwart of the comedy circuit and he of the distinct voice – Joe Pasquale is in Worthing

Say ‘Joe Pasquale’ and the first thing many people think of is his distinctive voice. But a distinctive voice does not a repeat Variety Performance player make. Nor over half a dozen one-man shows (which the talented comic has done to great success).

Victoria Nangle talks to comedy coach and the brains behind Comic Boom Jill Edwards about this top night

“Here’s what’s standing out for me about Comic Boom at the moment,” starts comedy coach Jill Edwards, whose previous students have included Jimmy Carr, Shappi Khorsandi, Shazia Mirza, and Hal Cruttenden. “Newer acts we’re developing are breaking through, getting nominated for awards or triumphing in high-profile competitions.” The name most recently that jumps out under that category is Angela Barnes, recent winner of the revived BBC Comedy Award, but she’s not the only one.

» Dom Joly interview

Dom Joly made a splash with Trigger Happy TV, became a travel writer and a broadsheet columnist and is now back performing, touring his brand new one man show. Victoria Nangle snatches a conversation with the man himself

Victoria Nangle: What can we expect from your show?
Dom Joly: Well, I’m calling it An Evening With Dom Joly, but that sounds a bit like An Evening With Tony Benn. I wouldn’t mind an evening with Tony Benn but I don’t think most people would.

It’s a kind of look back at my life. A self-filled retrospective of my last ten years and where things went right, where things went wrong, amusing stories, lots of audience interaction, they get to throw stones at me, we film a trailer for my new movie… they come up on stage and smash things.

I’d like to just do a show… you know, I’m not a stand up and I’m not going to become a stand up so I try to do a show that plays to my strengths, which are generally lying, chaos and ad libbing. I thought I’d like to do something that I’d want to watch really, and I’ve never been anywhere where if I like to hate the show I can throw stones at the performer afterwards so I thought I’d give them that option. So if for nothing else, come and throw stones at me – but don’t bring your own. Stones are provided.

VN: Even though we have lots of stones on the beach… Read the rest of this article »

» Preview: Germans Are Coming!

Victoria Nangle talks to Henning Wehn, self-styled German ambassador of comedy in England

What’s the new show all about?
No Surrender is the follow-up to last year’s My Struggle. I had my sights set for World Humour Domination but it hasn’t happened and I couldn’t secure so much as a book deal. But the minor blip doesn’t make me give up in my quest!

Will there be much music, as features beautifully in your other show 1000 Years Of German Humour With Otto Kuhnle?
I’m sure I’ll belt one out at some point. Don’t expect it to be melodic or in tune.

» Brighton Lights 31

Our new programme for thelatest.tv sees Juice FM presenter Guy Lloyd investigate all manner of things. He starts off with chart-topping band The Hoosiers who were mega-successful a couple of years ago, were dropped by their major label and have become fashionably independent. Their chart-topping album cost £1 million to record, their new album £100 and we reckon it's just as good. We have exclusive footage of this new record. Guy does crazy-golfing with them, checks out their sound-check and witnesses the fans' adoration of the band at Audio in Brighton. In future shows Guy will be doing waxing, Dot Cotton, air guitar and needs your suggestions for more crazy things (or people) to do. Send to bill@thelatest.co.uk
