You haven’t heard of them – yet – but the class of 2011 are set to blow you away in this year’s Burt Brill & Cardens Graduate Show

A new crop of creative talent will be revealed at the University of Brighton’s Faculty of Arts Burt Brill and Cardens Graduate Show 2011, which opens to the public from Saturday 4 June to Thursday 9 June.

This year’s graduate show is set to be the biggest and brightest on record. Exhibits from more than 500 students will transform the Faculty of Arts’ Grand Parade campus into the biggest gallery in the south-east of the UK. Over 15,000 visitors will discover the work of the class of 2011, perhaps taking the opportunity to commission work or make a purchase for their collection before students emerge as leading lights in their chosen disciplines.
Now located on three sites, visitors can explore the heart of the exhibition on three-floors of gallery space at Grand Parade and a unique ‘green pavilion’ in the quadrangle, constructed by architecture, interior architecture and urban studies students using earth, chalk and recycled timber to house their work.

Photography students’ work is displayed at Lighthouse, the leading arts agency and gallery based in Kensington Street, Brighton; and you can delve into exhibitions related to the dissertation research of History of Art and Design students at Pavilion Parade.

For exhibiting students the graduate show is the public climax to their years of study and the beginning of an exciting future. The class of 2011 follows alumni such as world famous fashion designers Barbara Hulanicki and Julien Macdonald as well as artist Alison Lapper and Turner Prize winners Rachel Whiteread and Keith Tyson.

Thanks to 16 consecutive years of sponsorship from Brighton-based solicitors Burt Brill and Cardens, the graduate show is one of the city’s cultural highlights. It boasts an ever-popular programme of events including a fashion and textiles catwalk show, student prize giving ceremony, family day and undergraduate open days.

» Guilt-free shopping: beauty & fashion products with the environment in mind

Stay on trend & support the world we live in with local vintage & ethical fashion buys

How often does the question of ethics come into your morning routine of getting dressed? It seems increasingly so, as vintage and ethical styles feature heavily in spring’s fashions. Plus, the vintage/eco-friendly option is ‘very Brighton’, meaning it’s never hard to find some great buys right on your doorstep.

So why choose vintage? Aside from getting an item that’s individual (a must for parties/weddings!), vintage clothing is a great investment – plus, it’s eco-friendly too. Recycling and re-using vintage clothing discourages the production of ‘throw-away fashion’. The result? It’s better for the environment.

We are becoming more aware as consumers on ‘value’ fashion, thinking twice about a ‘bargain’. It’s that question of ethics again: surely we all want a quality item that’s been made in fair working conditions? Fair-trade fashion is on the increase as a result. And then there’s the materials to consider too: organic cotton, environmentally-friendly fibres (with no harsh chemicals used in the production process) and sustainable sources are all sought after.

Here, we round up the best in local shopping that keeps ethics in mind, with some great vintage buys, and eco-friendly fashion and beauty products. Bamboo features heavily, but don’t worry – there’s plenty left for the Panda Bears!

Valentine’s Day is the time of year we all want to show someone we love just how much we care. Restaurants across Brighton will be packed to the brim with couples huddling over candlelit tables sharing wine, romantic gestures and thoughtful gifts.

For a limited time only and back by popular demand, the beautiful sculpture-like charm is available in silver and 18ct gold. Only 10 have been made so hurry while stocks last.

Our new programme for thelatest.tv sees Juice FM presenter Guy Lloyd investigate all manner of things. He starts off with chart-topping band The Hoosiers who were mega-successful a couple of years ago, were dropped by their major label and have become fashionably independent. Guy does crazy-golfing with them, checks out their sound-check and witnesses the fans' adoration of the band at Audio in Brighton. In future shows Guy will be doing waxing, Dot Cotton, air guitar and needs your suggestions for more crazy things (or people) to do. Send to bill@thelatest.co.uk
