» Amy Lamé interview

She’s the hostess with the mostest – it can only be Amy Lamé. Paul Disney caught up with the chubby glamourpuss

Amy Lame

Describe yourself
I am a writer, performer, television and radio presenter and all-round chubby glamourpuss!

How does it feel being a British citizen for the last few years?
People are still surprised at how strong my accent is though. You can take the girl out of Jersey, but you can’t take the Jersey out of the girl (that’s NEW Jersey!).

So what do you miss most about New Jersey?
I like playing Bruce Springsteen REALLLLLY loud on my Mustang convertible car stereo. Or blow drying my hair super-big, wearing lots of gold jewellery and having a deep mahogany tan. Eating a huge plate of disco fries at 3am in the morning at a roadside diner. Having beer chugging competitions at the annual Fireman’s Fair.

Linda Holm, Superintendent Registrar of Brighton Register Office, talks to Paul Disney about the happy business of love

Linda Holm

Describe yourself?
I have worked for the Registration Service for 23 years. I love dealing with people and consider my role an honour and a privilege. Nothing gives me more pleasure than seeing couples commit to each other, whether they be gay or straight. It’s a special occasion.

Why Brighton and Hove?
I was working for Cambridge Register Office for 14 years but had reached a point where my career couldn’t progress further. I had alwayswanted to live by the sea; so when a colleague at Southampton Register Office informed me a position had come up in Brighton and Hove, I immediately applied for it. So here I am, enjoying every minute of it!

So what’s so cool about your job here?
Brighton and Hove is a great cosmopolitan city and the council have been really pro-active in promoting and supporting the registration service in launching civil partnerships and other services. I have been given much automony to develop and improve all aspects of the registration service here, and it is working out very well.

Has Civil Partnerships changed society, in relation to the LGBT communities here? Read the rest of this article »

» Miss GayUK and Ireland 08

Kimberly SangerThe popular Miss GayUK is back this year, with heats all over the UK – including Brighton and Hove.

The heats will start in Manchester on 13 and 20 April with the final on 14 November 2008 at Nightingales in Birmingham.

Organiser Leah Shafik and her partner Nina, will be holding regional heats throughout the year and for the first time the heats will include Ireland. “There are no limits to who you can be,” says Leah. “The judges will be looking at three areas: confidence, appearance (not how you look, but the way you portray yourself comfortably) and personality.”

» Brighton Lights 31

Our new programme for thelatest.tv sees Juice FM presenter Guy Lloyd investigate all manner of things. He starts off with chart-topping band The Hoosiers who were mega-successful a couple of years ago, were dropped by their major label and have become fashionably independent. Their chart-topping album cost £1 million to record, their new album £100 and we reckon it's just as good. We have exclusive footage of this new record. Guy does crazy-golfing with them, checks out their sound-check and witnesses the fans' adoration of the band at Audio in Brighton. In future shows Guy will be doing waxing, Dot Cotton, air guitar and needs your suggestions for more crazy things (or people) to do. Send to bill@thelatest.co.uk
