» Romany Mark Bruce interview

His artwork has been described as ‘troubled’ and ‘dark’ but Romany Mark Bruce is far from that, as Paul Disney discovered

Describe yourself
Describe myself? I’m passionate about what I do. I guess you could say I’m a compulsive obsessive when it comes to art. Art can take over from everything else.

Why Brighton and Hove?
Well I don’t want to say the obvious things such as the sea and the South Downs. What I would definitely say is the quality of life here compared to somewhere such as London for example, is so much better.

You studied law and qualified in 1985 at the University of Leicester, why live the life of an artist?
Well, I went to a rather academic grammar school in Lisburn near Belfast in Northern Ireland. I used to argue so much with the teachers there that they pointed out to me I should be in a law firm and I wasn’t ‘stupid enough’ to study art.

Describe yourself
I suppose I’m a bit of a veteran now as an active organiser of things gay – I started 30 years ago this December, when I became secretary of Brighton Lesbian Group.

Why do you live in Brighton?
Brighton is, without question, one of the easiest places in the country for a lesbian to live openly. And I’m a Sussex girl, so it’s home for me.

» Mark Hyndman of Brighton Bandits

Mark Hyndman plays for Brighton Bandits FC. Paul Disney caught up with him to discover some home truths about gay and straight men and football clubs

Mark Hyndman

Describe yourself
MH: I am a very committed person from a relationship, sport and business environment perspective. I have a vocation that demands the best of me, and certainly takes up most of my time during the week, so at weekends and particular evenings, that is my time, and I certainly take advantage of it.

Explain what the Brighton Bandits is all about
MH: The Bandits were formed to allow those who wanted to play football, who perhaps felt intimidated by the volatile, and to a degree, the homophobic world of football, the opportunity to play, have a kick about, and meet like minded people. We encourage people of all ages, and abilities to come and play with us.

» Brighton Lights 31

Our new programme for thelatest.tv sees Juice FM presenter Guy Lloyd investigate all manner of things. He starts off with chart-topping band The Hoosiers who were mega-successful a couple of years ago, were dropped by their major label and have become fashionably independent. Their chart-topping album cost £1 million to record, their new album £100 and we reckon it's just as good. We have exclusive footage of this new record. Guy does crazy-golfing with them, checks out their sound-check and witnesses the fans' adoration of the band at Audio in Brighton. In future shows Guy will be doing waxing, Dot Cotton, air guitar and needs your suggestions for more crazy things (or people) to do. Send to bill@thelatest.co.uk
