» News: Brighton & Hove City Council wins emissions award

Brighton & Hove City council has won a nation award for its work to promote electric vehicles.

The council’s vehicle charging point scheme began in February 2010 and was the first of its kind outside of London.

The project won CIVINET’s PRISM Award for the most outstanding, ambitious and innovative scheme in the field of sustainable urban mobility in the UK and Ireland.

Councillor Ian Davey, deputy leader and cabinet member for transport, said: “Our vision is to make Brighton and Hove the UK’s greenest city, and we are committed to achieving a clean and energy-efficient transport system.

“It’s exciting to think that what we do here will influence future transport policy, not only in the UK but also in Europe.”

There are currently four on-street charging points, in Bartholomew’s in central Brighton and Ditchling Road opposite The Level. With a further four recently installed, two at Withdean Stadium which will be up and running at the end of the week and two at Madeira Drive to be in operation be the autumn.

A registration scheme for UK residents has been set up by the council and Elektromotive and a trial period is underway offering incentives to encourage drivers to switch to electric vehicles, including free registration, parking and electricity whilst vehicles are recharging.

Brighton and Hove is the only city in the country to have gained funding for such a project from the EU’s CIVITAS Archimedes Project and is working with five other cities in Europe to share best practice, experience and skills.

» News: Sea Life campaign against illegal whaling

Brighton Sea Life Centre has won an important victory in the battle against illegal whaling by helping to get the America government involved in the cause.

The centre, along with its sister Sea Life attractions across Europe, have been lobbying people to boycott seafood from Iceland because their main supplier is involved in whaling.

Sea Life’s campaign partner the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society says Sea Life has played a big part in its campaign to persuade the US Secretary of Commerce to recommend trade sanctions against Iceland.

Max Leviston, General Manager of Brighton Sea Life Centre, said: “We launched a campaign to recruit young whaling detectives to help persuade supermarkets, restaurants and others to boycott fish from Iceland.

“We also helped raise awareness generally of the fact that Iceland has killed 280 endangered fin whales and 186 minke whales since it resumed whaling in 2006, in spite of an international ban.”

» News: Brighton Looks To Build Links With French Town

Brighton and Hove City Council is exploring ways to build new links with the French town of Dieppe.

Councillor Alex Phillips is the council’s representative on ‘Arc Manche’, a European Union economic network that promotes the interests of areas bordering both side of the Channel.

During a recent fact-finding visit to Dieppe sponsored by the French town’s council, Councillor Phillips met a group of young people from deprived backgrounds involved in a programme of sporting and cultural activities.

The group are visiting Brighton and Hove on Wednesday 27 July and Councillor Phillips will be meeting them at the Palace Pier during their stay.

Councillor Phillips said: “Dieppe is a wonderful town and we want to do more to develop links with them. ? ?In particular I would like to see more exchanges between young people where they can stay for a few days – maybe with host families – and really benefit from both a cultural and a language learning experience.”
