» Good to talk

Seann Walsh thinks mobiles are hardly a talking point, but wouldn’t be without one

Mobile phones are a constant source of conversational material. The opening of pretty much any meeting, be it business or social, seems to struggle to get going without some comment or other about phones: “My phone keeps doing this!” “I hate predictive texting!” The subject of phones has joined the likes of the weather in the ritual of space-filling small-talk.

» The Train Strain

Seann Walsh finds the trauma of train travel is not helped by the existence of other people

I spend most of my life on trains, going to London, or the Midlands, or Berkshire, or Wales, or the North, or any part of the country that isn’t home. The North is the worst of these. Not only is it the grimmest, full of people who sound as if they want to kill themselves, but look as if they’ve killed someone else; it is also the furthest away, which means more time on trains, which means more delays, more toilets that don’t work, more rail replacement buses, and so on, and so on, and so on. » Seann’s World: Time Please

Seann Walsh looks at that Great British institution – the pub, and the rules for success

The pub is probably Britain’s best friend. It’s there for us on Friday nights when only a beer can end the week. It’s there for birthdays, anniversaries and funerals. Thanks to licensing laws, it’s there for us twenty-four hours a day. It’s the meeting point before a night out. It is a night out. It’s a reference point for directions. » Seann’s World: The impotence of speech

Seann Walsh looks at the power of words, and how the lazy use of speech is bad for society

Words are underrated. So much of what we say is taken for granted, replaced in importance by how we say it.
Body language is important. It only takes a phone conversation to realise that. We have all become stuck before in the linguistic quicksand of our own inarticulacy, unable to convey what we mean without some gesture or other. Similarly, the written word illuminates the significance of tone and delivery. When we’re deprived of them by emails, texts and things such as this article, many paths to nuance become uncrossable.

» Brighton Lights 31

Our new programme for thelatest.tv sees Juice FM presenter Guy Lloyd investigate all manner of things. He starts off with chart-topping band The Hoosiers who were mega-successful a couple of years ago, were dropped by their major label and have become fashionably independent. Their chart-topping album cost £1 million to record, their new album £100 and we reckon it's just as good. We have exclusive footage of this new record. Guy does crazy-golfing with them, checks out their sound-check and witnesses the fans' adoration of the band at Audio in Brighton. In future shows Guy will be doing waxing, Dot Cotton, air guitar and needs your suggestions for more crazy things (or people) to do. Send to bill@thelatest.co.uk
