It’s 1966 and Didi is Britain’s starry-eyed hopeful in the Eurovision Song Contest, back in those heady days when points were won on merit and artists took the competition extremely seriously.
This highly amusing, jaunty play took the contest as its starting point to explore the relationships between writer, composer and performer, and the frustrations of unrequited love.
Some small creases on this first performance – like why did we never get to hear the whole of the song written especially for the production? – will no doubt be ironed out as the play runs on.
On the whole, it was a very well received, highly entertaining, nostalgic fantasy.
