» Comedy Preview: Prince Arthur Comedy Night
Local talent is one of the things Brighton is most proud of. Which means that every comedy club has to meet a certain standard. There are too many other quality nights around for a below average show to survive. The Prince Arthur Comedy Night, the third of our local new act picks this month, is certainly no flash in the pan. It’s run by Richard Sawyer and Aidan Goatley, who gives us the lowdown…
Why should we go to Prince Arthur Comedy?
Because it’s the loveliest venue and has a very laid back approach. Lots of new acts mixing with the not so new.
Who’s the best big name to play your gig?
Seann Walsh [Mock The Week, Grumpy Young Men] turned up once…
Who will be the next big names that you’ve seen on the Prince Arthur stage?
Romesh Ranganathan will be someone to look out for. Mind you, he owes me money…
Who would be your ideal line-up?
Hal Cruttenden, Zoe Lyons, Patrick Monahan.
What are the best and worst aspects of being the compere?
Best: getting to do new material. Worst: finding new material.
Give us a comedy gig anecdote that happened to you…
Doing my first gig in London I’d invited several friends. The compere announced me thus: ‘He’s brought his fan club. They might think he’s great, you might think he’s s***, Aidan Goatley!’
Give us a comedy anecdote that happened to someone you know…
Er… can’t think of one you could publish.
What’s the best thing about comedy in Brighton?
Brighton itself. Best. City. Ever.
Who should be chuckled off Brighton Pier?
No-one. It’s bloody cold down there.
The Prince Arthur Comedy Night with acts including Dave Carter, Lou Conran, Ella Green, Sasha Phillips, Mari Polonen, compered by Wayne Connolly, Thursday 19 August, Prince Arthur pub, 8.30pm, free.
