Zara Baker finds the six-month check-up a thing of the past and welcomes a whole new wave of dentistry

DentistryOnce upon a time it was the place to avoid, but now more of us are spending time in the dentist chair. The modern-day dentist isn’t just a place for maintaining optimum oral care, although don’t forget that this is its main purpose. No, dentists today are known for their cosmetic treatments, making a trip to ‘the chair’ a chosen destination, and not simply a requirement.

Private or NHS, you can walk into the dentists’ surgery and expect so much more. Botox or restylane? It may have nothing to do with the mouth, but these are examples of treatments offered in dentist surgeries today.

A Botox injection in the face for a more youthful appearance or Restylane treatment to hydrate and plump up the skin may sound like something exclusively for the rich and famous, but the availability and falling prices of such treatments means more people are able to go for them.

You can leave the dentist surgery now looking like a walking ad for Extreme Makeover or 10 Years Younger. It’s no longer about metal braces, drills and fillings. Dental practices are moving away from the stereotypical setting that many people have a phobia of and studiously avoid.

A cosmetic dentist is an oasis where treatment can work wonders for one’s self confidence and self esteem. Also, it is a place people are choosing to go to. There’s a high demand for cosmetic dentists, and more dentists training, as people realise that the picture-perfect smile is achieveable.

The advances in dentistry are quite astounding. Invisalign braces are a virtually invisible method of straightening teeth, making it a popular choice among adults. Where metal braces cause some discomfort and can are difficult to clean, the Invisalign braces are hygienic as they are removed when you eat.

Discoloured teeth can be treated with a whitening treatment, but it’s important not to just ‘coat’ the problem. A cleaning treatment to remove plaque and stains first will leave teeth healthier and brighter.

Cosmetic dentistry may make it easier to have the perfect smile but keep in mind that oral care comes first with regular brushing, flossing and mouthwash. Oh and a trip to the chair every six months too.
