Zara Baker says forget the crash diet for summer and think about nutrition and energy intake first
As we focus on reaching an ideal weight for baring skin in the summer, nutrition can take a backseat. Weight loss becomes the goal and the side effects of eating an unbalanced diet begin to show. Energy levels are affected, along with our mood.
Good nutrition needs to be in our mind, but how do we ensure we are getting enough nutrition? And just how much is enough? I set out to find some answers.
The nutrition in our diet and energy needed differs between each individual. The amount is based on our BMI (Body Mass Index) which calculates if we are a healthy weight for our height. Visit nhsdirect.nhs.uk to calculate your BMI. As I tentatively entered my weight and height on to the site, I was pleased to see the results load up and say my BMI is healthy, despite any body issues one may have.
A diet high in fat and low in protein can contribute to health factors later on in life including coronary heart disease, type two diabetes and some cancers. A healthy nutritional plan of a balanced diet, which includes some fat (unsaturated), is key.
Five-a-day of fruit and vegetables has become a popular slogan in society, used in advertising and by health care professionals. If we aim to get our ‘five-a-day,’ though, it is probably more difficult than you think. A medium sized piece of fruit, such as an apple, is one portion. A fruit smoothie also counts as one, as does a slice of large fruit such as pineapple or melon. For variety, try a handful of grapes, cherries or dried fruit (tinned fruit counts too) and a side salad.
The British Nutrition Foundation (www.nutrition.org.uk) carried out a national data survey and found from those asked that children eat less then half the recommended five a day. In an average week, one in five children aged four to 18 ate no fruit at all.
