» Gardner Centre to reopen

Gardner Arts Centre is to reopen after a multi million pound refurbishment. Sussex University is to spend £3.8million to £4.8million turning the much-loved venue at its Falmer campus into a flexible auditorium, exhibition gallery, café and three studios.
It was closed in April 2007 after Brighton and Hove City Council withdrew a £30,000 annual grant and the Gardner was unable to meet criteria to attract Arts Council funding.
The Gardner Centre could be refurbished in time for the university’s 50th anniversary in 2011-2012.
It will mainly be used for university performances and research, but external theatre groups will be able to use the facilities.
The university said it imagined the venue being used for workshops, conferences and residencies with international performers.
Professor Paul Layzell, deputy vice chancellor, said: “The Gardner building is set to become an exciting and stimulating venue for the exploration, presentation and study of creativity and the creative arts.“
