The Duke of York’s continue their David Lean retrospective with this dramatic double bill. Great Expectations sees Lean tackle Charles Dickens in a highly atmospheric epic starring John Mills as the plucky orphan Pip and Jean Simmons as Estella. Madeleine, meanwhile, is based on the true story of Madeleine Smith, a young Glasgow woman who stood trial in 1857 for the murder of her lover. Both are tender efforts from a man who revelled in the darker reflections of human relations.
