Why use certified organic cosmetics?
Going organic is not a sales gimmick; it really is excellent for your health and wellbeing. Yet, while many of us have embraced the organic food ethic, not so many have cottoned on to certified organic cosmetics. Why not, I wonder? If you choose not to eat something laden with chemicals from fertilisers and pesticides, why would you want to massage these into your skin?

Uniquely Organic EcoSpa, uses only pure, organic oils and products in our facial, massage and beauty treatments, our three key reasons for using certified organic cosmetics being:
• They are free of toxic chemicals that can permeate the skin so they’re less likely to cause an allergic reaction and more naturally in tune with the body.
• They are clearly labelled, listing every ingredient (and they sound like proper words not chemical formulae).
• They feel and smell natural and last longer than non-organic alternatives as they generally contain less water.
And organic farming is also great for the environment and kind to wildlife.

How can you be sure what’s really organic?
It’s hardly surprising that people feel bewildered. The UK cosmetic industry is not yet regulated and some manufacturers practise ‘greenwashing’ (making misleading or dishonest environmental claims) quite legally.

The only way to be sure that you’re getting the real thing is to check for a ‘certified organic’ stamp. This shows the product has passed rigorous monitoring from seed to store by an independent certification authority such as the Soil Association. Stringent checks on how each ingredient is grown, harvested, stored, transported and processed are carried out and the product will only be certified if each stage gets ticked. Ethical standards such as fair trade, no animal testing and recyclable packaging are also covered.

Aren’t organic products really expensive?
Because every ingredient used in organic cosmetics is farmed sustainably, prices may be slightly higher than synthetic ranges but I think they’re well worth the extra. They give you complete peace of mind and make you feel like a million dollars.

Ranges stocked at the EcoSpa include Pinks Boutique skincare, Nvey Eco make-up, Balm Balm aromatherapy oils and our own spa label, Chakrosanct body massage oils. All are certified organic, wonderful to use and can be bought in-spa or from our online shop.

» Brighton Lights 31

Our new programme for thelatest.tv sees Juice FM presenter Guy Lloyd investigate all manner of things. He starts off with chart-topping band The Hoosiers who were mega-successful a couple of years ago, were dropped by their major label and have become fashionably independent. Their chart-topping album cost £1 million to record, their new album £100 and we reckon it's just as good. We have exclusive footage of this new record. Guy does crazy-golfing with them, checks out their sound-check and witnesses the fans' adoration of the band at Audio in Brighton. In future shows Guy will be doing waxing, Dot Cotton, air guitar and needs your suggestions for more crazy things (or people) to do. Send to bill@thelatest.co.uk
