Latest 7 looks forward to a stage performance of one of the most popular films of all time – It’s a Wonderful Life

With all this talk of the ‘credit crunch Christmas’, you might think the last thing you’d want to see would be a play about greedy bankers and financial turmoil.
It’s a Wonderful Life, however, is the perfect play to see this festive season, as the New Venture Theatre presents a stage version, adapted by Gerry McCrudden, of Frank Capra’s moving and heartwarming 1946 film, which is made all the more relevant by today’s troubled economic times.

“Hey, look mister – we serve hard drinks in here for men who want to get drunk fast, and we don’t need any characters around to give the joint ‘atmosphere‘. Is that clear? Or do I have to slip you my left for a convincer?” 1946 film script

It’s a Wonderful Life is one of the most popular and uplifting films of all time, telling the tale of George Bailey, a kind and generous man who is driven to the point of suicide by the actions of Mr Potter, a rapacious local banker. As he ponders taking his life, George’s guardian angel shows him all the good he has done for the local community by demonstrating how much worse off the community would have been without his kindness.
Gerry McCrudden, director, said: “Although the film came out in 1946, it has many echoes in the current financial climate.”
It’s a Wonderful Life, New Venture Theatre, Tuesday 16 to Saturday 20 December 7.45pm & Sunday 21 December, 2.30pm Tickets: £7 (8.50 Friday and Saturday Nights) Box Office: 01273 746118 or www.newventure.org.uk

» Brighton Lights 31

Our new programme for thelatest.tv sees Juice FM presenter Guy Lloyd investigate all manner of things. He starts off with chart-topping band The Hoosiers who were mega-successful a couple of years ago, were dropped by their major label and have become fashionably independent. Their chart-topping album cost £1 million to record, their new album £100 and we reckon it's just as good. We have exclusive footage of this new record. Guy does crazy-golfing with them, checks out their sound-check and witnesses the fans' adoration of the band at Audio in Brighton. In future shows Guy will be doing waxing, Dot Cotton, air guitar and needs your suggestions for more crazy things (or people) to do. Send to bill@thelatest.co.uk
