The Book and The rose

St George’s Day is being celebrated with a day of books, prose, poetry, spoken word and song. On stage there will be a number of acoustic/ folk acts – old and new, traditional and modern – including Conrad Vingoe, Daniel Marcus Clarke (ex-The Hat), Ben Paley and Tab Hunter, Jane Bom-Bane and Nick Pynn, Packpins (who specialise in secular music of the 16th and 17th centuries) and Rayon Breed (formerly The Wellingtons).
The event takes place between 11am and 5pm.
Saturday 25 April, Jubilee Square

Wooden Shjips

San Francisco continues to throb with the sound of psychedelia, as epitomised by this beardy, hypnotising and misspelt outfit, who emanate a sort of bluesy vintage drone – heavy on the fuzz guitar, Krautrock-esque grooves and reverb-drenched vocals. Cool as, or just plain old-fashioned? Or is that cool again? Don’t ask me, I’m just a confused music journo…
Tuesday 20 April, Freebutt

Ben Ottewell

Possessor of the finest growl in rock, Gomez’s Ben Ottewell is based around these parts, and a significant reason why the near-retro Gomez caught the imagination back in the day (remember, they won the Mercury Music Prize back in 1998 for Bring It On). This is a special, intimate gig at the Fairtrade Gallery, as part of the April Alternative organised by gallery owner Tim.
Friday 23 April, Fairtrade Gallery

Max Mezzowave

Sussex boy who has remixed for the likes of Lamb and Lou Rhodes and been actively involved in the ambient chill and alt-dance scenes for many years. His new project sees the launch of the Beauty EP, and the live band features the brilliantly soulful vocals of Alison David and Angie Brown. More on an upbeat psychedelic funky soul tip these days, the gig will be followed by a yet-to-be-disclosed party.
Tickets available via www.mezzowave.net or Rounder Records in Brighton.
Saturday 23 April, St John Sub Castro Church, Lewes

» Brighton Lights 31

Our new programme for thelatest.tv sees Juice FM presenter Guy Lloyd investigate all manner of things. He starts off with chart-topping band The Hoosiers who were mega-successful a couple of years ago, were dropped by their major label and have become fashionably independent. Their chart-topping album cost £1 million to record, their new album £100 and we reckon it's just as good. We have exclusive footage of this new record. Guy does crazy-golfing with them, checks out their sound-check and witnesses the fans' adoration of the band at Audio in Brighton. In future shows Guy will be doing waxing, Dot Cotton, air guitar and needs your suggestions for more crazy things (or people) to do. Send to bill@thelatest.co.uk

AOH Special: It’s Festival time in Brighton & Hove, which means the Artists Open Houses have opened their doors for another year! Maps of all the trails can be picked up across the city. We love nothing better than browsing and buying arts and crafts, and there is so much going on throughout May that we’ve made it easier by bringing the Artists Open Houses to you! We have 11 special programmes, featuring artists in their own houses. So here’s your chance to go ‘through the keyhole’ so to speak as we visit the artists in their own environment.
