Only date in the South East for Zach Condon and his band of multi-instrumentalists who wield accordions, trumpets, mandolins, ukuleles, a trombone, bass and double bass. Inspired by Balkan folk-pop, French chanteuse, Mexican troubabdour, ‘80s synth, and ‘90s house, the aptly named Beirut (after the highly pluralistic city) are an unlikely success story.

Busy weekend for this Brighton outfit, firstly with the re-scheduled launch of their debut album Universal, a ‘60s/’70s country-rock inspired affair full of driving energy and hooks. The day after it’s the return of their mini festival, The Big Monkey Street Gig, this time in aid of Kiya Survivors. It’s to be held outside The Unitarian Church, and they have secured the wonderfully theatrical psychobilly of Eighties B-Line Matchbox Disaster, plus local stalwarts Kovak, Gentleman Starkey and Sweet Sweet Lies.

Water Tower Bucket Boys
They could only be from America with a name like that, and their hard driving approach to old-time country and bluegrass, via tight vocal harmonies and powerful instrumentals, is winning them plenty of fans. Raw, real, and exciting.

Archetypal out-there hippy Daevid Allen is a legend amongst the psychedelic brigade, having fused the imagery and words of William Burroughs with the philosophical space jazz of Sun Ra. A founder of both Soft Machine and Gong, Magic Brother was actually the name of the first Gong album back in ‘69. And to think that Richard Branson once signed his band…
