» Naked Eye Gallery: Bare Vision
Dion Salvador Lloyd shows his work at David Donno’s Naked Eye Gallery
On a bright, but chill spring afternoon I drive to Hove to meet gallery owner David Donno at artist Dion Salvador Lloyd’s studio. The plan is that we will look at some work, both finished and in progress, prior to Dion’s one-man show at David’s Naked Eye Gallery in Hove during the Brighton Festival.

There are photographs to be taken, and I am keen to look at how Dion works and how David relates to the artist. The studio is tidy, the work and the materials organised, but there is surprisingly little space.
Immediately I can sense a strong understanding between the two men. I am also impressed by the work, which seems more powerful in this situation than when I had seen a few canvases in a mixed show at the gallery.
The photos go well, both are relaxed and having fun, but I very soon realise that talking about the work and the way they work together as artist and gallery owner is nowhere near as interesting as Dion’s impassionate and often monumental paintings.
Dion’s canvases and works on board have an intensity and depth that I find mesmeric. His sense of both colour and space is imposing and yet at the same time there is an intimacy to these abstracted land and seascapes that is captivating.
Photographs taken, and a few notes made, by the time I leave the studio I have already resolved to let his imagery do the work rather than attempt to do it here in words.
