Wall-E (U)

Director: Andrew Stanton
Wall-E

Pixar blitz the opposition in this animated masterpiece. The story follows itty-bitty robot Wall-E (short for Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class) who discovers a new purpose in life when he meets a sleek search robot named EVE.
7 Selects
With a host of superbly imagined characters and a lead character who utters no more than three words throughout, this is classic Pixar tomfoolery. Chuck in a whole bucket of cuddles, a refreshing dose of surreal humour, a touching environmental message and a race across space and you have pure, unadulterated cinematic pleasure.

Journey to the Centre of the Earth 3D (PG)

Dir: Eric BrevigJourney to the Centre of the Earth
This new adaptation of Jules Verne’s classic tale of adventure is a somewhat hammy affair. Brendan Fraser, occasionally good when seen opposite a Mummy but usually as interesting as a pebble, takes the lead alongside a collection of misfits. Together they embark on a quest to find out what happened to Fraser’s missing brother, only to discover a fantastic but – oh, what a surprise – dangerous world in the centre of the Earth. The effects may be 3D but the characters and plot remain entirely two dimensional.

Summer Hours (12A)

Dir: Olivier Assayas
This latest French drama from Assayas (Irma Vep, Demonlover, Boarding Gate) follows the fate of a priceless private art collection, as family members disagree how to share it. With a suitably Gallic cast including Juliette Binoche, Jérémie Renier, and Edith Scob, this is an intelligent account of the power of family. It’s defiantly French, but this is classy work in spite of the intellectual posturing.

Man on Wire (15)

Dir: James MarshMan on Wire
This documentary takes a look at what is considered by some to be the artistic crime of the century, tightrope walker Philippe Petit’s daring, but illegal, high-wire routine performed between New York’s World Trade Centre’s twin towers in 1974. Marsh is better known for keenly observed efforts such as The King but this sees him finding a subject who is as much muse as he is acrobat. With an array of original footage this is right up there with Touching the Void for adrenaline-drenched nostalgia.

Wall-E totally looks like the robot from “Short Circuit”… minus the cheesy 80’s style of course
