» Review: Battles – Live

Battles’ second Brighton visit was never going to be anything but amazing. A sold out Concorde swells to this blisteringly danceable fusion of rock, metal, jazz and electronica as the visionary US super group triumph once again.

Surprisingly, tonight’s big successes aren’t the singles ‘Tonto‘ or ‘Atlas‘ (although they are great), but the trip-hoppy ‘Leyendecker‘ and plain trippy early EP release ‘Tras‘, which grinds along infectiously. Sticksman John Stanier’s kit (complete with madly high cymbal) is centre stage, highlighting rhythm’s overwhelming importance to his band. As Gloria Estefan might say (sorry, Gloria), the rhythm’s gonna get you, and sure enough, tonight, it spares no one.
