» Review: Gin Panic + Apologies, I Have None + Rooftops + Cautionhorses + The Dead Beats
With shelves adorned with anarchist literature and a self-consciously gritty façade, it seems somehow appropriate that this sterling blast of subterranean punk and rock took place in the Cowley Club’s environs. Obvious highlights included the furious hardcore bark of Brighton/ London shouters The Dead Beat and angular Brightonian art-rockers Cautionhorses, whose stop-start stoner dynamic lent a distinctive jerky counterpoint to the heavier bands’ downtuned grooves. The eclectic line-up provided a decent glimpse of the breadth of quality guitar music bubbling under the occasionally bland indie veneer of Brighton’s music scene.
