» Review: John Peel’s Shed
In 2002 John Osborne won a box of records from John Peel’s shed, and this gently inspirational solo show (a companion piece to his 2009 history of British radio, Radio Head) is the story of what happened next. An office drone turned poet, Osborne occupies the same corner of stand-up as Daniel Kitson – one lovingly littered with coffee mugs, doodled on volumes of Larkin and laboriously worked out playlists. His whimsy is acute, his loveliness far from toothless; and though his show lacks the emotional and linguistic density of Kitsons’, it’s enjoyable to imagine him layering it up over time, perhaps telling us about the fate of punk covers band Oizone, playing more of those records… Because more than anything, this is a show about the pleasure of having your own personal project – and leaves you itching to get out into the world, or back to your bedsit, and discover your own.
