» Review of the week: Kovak

Brighton stalwarts Kovak finally released their debut album tonight and proceeded to turn the event into a celebration of their accessible, hooky and high-energy disco rock. Taking their cue from the likes of new wave acts such as Blondie, Duran Duran and the B-52s, Kovak are a streamlined juggernaut of big guitars, synth hooks, pounding beats and, of course, some great songs. While not particularly challenging lyrically (“My boyfriend’s a rock star“; “This girl needs your body“; “I love the shark suits, I love the hairdos“) it’s the way they want it, the dumb fun-ness of it all, moreover played superbly and produced with care. Some of those tunes just will not leave my brain. “I love the dance floor/I love the people there…”
