» Review: These New Puritans
They looked like they should’ve been in a Tesco carpark back in their Essex hometown of Southend-On-Sea rather than the sweaty climes of Audio. So it came as something of a surprise to hear the dramatic new sound of nu-rave refugees These New Puritans. Recently released second album, Hidden, has rightly garnered acclaim from all angles; thundering drums, warped, haunting choir synth noises and ritual rhythms replacde the thoroughly enjoyable but a little formulaic previous art-rock incarnation. Dark, malformed tango and tribal electronic beats were only slightly hampered by sub-standard vocals. Menace loomed in the basement’s shadows; the kids from Skins, it seems, have finally grown neon fangs.
