» Review: Wooden Shjips + You’re Smiling Now But We’ll All Turn Into Demons
Tonight’s brilliantly-monikered main support, You’re Smiling Now But We’ll All Turn Into Demons, opened proceedings well with their raucous brand of stoner rock. Though not entirely original, their guitar posturing is an ideal side-dish to Wooden Shjips’ hallucinatory main course. Hailing from San Francisco, the home of US psych-rock, the headliners wear their influences on their sleeve. Laid-back, almost trance inducing organ rhythms come complete with studied ‘60s-style sounds and stage mannerisms informed by the likes of Jefferson Airplane, Iron Butterfly and the Grateful Dead. Though accomplished, WS’ live show lacks the visionary verve of their heroes. The result was a loving homage but nothing more.
