Sir Peter Blake to show at ink_d to celebrate the gallery’s 1st birthday with new show
Sir Peter Blake, Godfather of British Pop Art, will have a month long exhibition this April at the small independent Brighton art gallery and printing studio Ink_d. The show, ‘Pop Art on Paper‘, will run from Friday 4 April to Saturday, 3 May and will coincide with the young gallery’s first birthday. There will be new, updated prints taken from his 1960s period. This was a very important time in the artist’s life during which this retiring, sexually naïve man began to paint simple, bold, but direct pieces – somewhat at odds in an era high on the possibilities of life and sexual excess.
Works such as ‘Piece of Marilyn Monroe’s Dressing Room Door’ and ‘Girly Door’ were originally painted on doors using household paints, enamel and his trademark collage. They show the iconic nature of Peter Blake’s oeuvre, the marriage of popular culture and fine art and ultimately his strength as a modern artist. The new prints to be shown at the gallery will all be a slightly different take on the original canvases.
The gallery launched in Brighton’s North Laine area in April 2007 during the celebrations for the Festival Fringe. It has exclusive solo shows from artists such as Dan Baldwin and James Cauty to up and coming artists like Graham Carter and Chris Kettle.
“It’s an honour to know that someone like Sir Peter, who has been at the forefront of British Pop art since the 1960s even knows about our gallery,“ comments Lindsay Alkin and Dan Hipkin gallery directors. “When we opened we never imagined that in less than a year we’d be attracting artists of such celebrated calibre. His prints are a hugely important new reworking of his art, a personal touch from such an active octogenarian. We’re delighted that the granddaddy of Pop Art is giving his time to a new gallery, we’re just a year old and that means a lot.“
Probably best known for his cover of The Beatles Sergeant Pepper album sleeve, Peter Blake also designed the Band Aid ‘Do They Know it’s Christmas‘ cover, as well as Paul Weller’s Stanley Road, the John Peel Tribute Album and a greatest hits album for Oasis. In 2007 Coca Cola celebrated its biennale by commissioning a special piece from the artist, who continues to work from his studio in Hammersmith, London.
