An evening of physical theatre, music and art from Artichoke

Why not go along to Show Off, an exciting evening of physical theatre, music and art by children and adults from Artichoke Artgroup and Somerhill Junior School. The showcase is a series of fun and action filled short plays born from improvisation games, comics studies, storytelling and mask workshops.

Helen Longton-Howorth, Somerhill School Deputy Head says: ”Wonderfully original and professional, the children’s dedication and attention to detail is fantastic. We are very proud to support such talented performers.”

The programme will include physical theatre with children from Somerhill Junior School and Florence Leon, Artichoke’s theatre director (each short play lasts between eight to fifteen minutes) with pieces like Spaceship, based on bande mimee (comic) style, The Race and Red, based on conteurs mimeurs (storytelling) style, Egg, which uses larvarian masks handmade by the performers, and a clown piece called Pull and Shove.

There will be music from James de Malplaquet – Artichoke’s music director, who is a singer, songwriter and percussionist from The Miserable Rich. He will be joined by Jacob Richardson – a singer, songwriter and guitarist from Sons of Noel plus Adrian Zachary Hooper and guests on flamenco and jazz guitar.

There will also be an art exhibition, featuring children from Somerhill Junior School alongside artists including Paul Cemmick, cartoons; Roberta Young, art and sculpture; David Curtis and Lisa Childs, 3D design; André Lichtenberg, photography; Bip Mistry, photography; Kandy Akland, photography and Solange Leon who designed the Bilbao’s Wave posters.

Show Off, Westhill Hall Community Centre, Compton Avenue, Seven Dials, Brighton Saturday 18 July at 3.00pm and Tuesday 21 July at 7.00pm. Entrance £2.50 on the door and refreshments will be available.

» Brighton Lights 31

Our new programme for thelatest.tv sees Juice FM presenter Guy Lloyd investigate all manner of things. He starts off with chart-topping band The Hoosiers who were mega-successful a couple of years ago, were dropped by their major label and have become fashionably independent. Their chart-topping album cost £1 million to record, their new album £100 and we reckon it's just as good. We have exclusive footage of this new record. Guy does crazy-golfing with them, checks out their sound-check and witnesses the fans' adoration of the band at Audio in Brighton. In future shows Guy will be doing waxing, Dot Cotton, air guitar and needs your suggestions for more crazy things (or people) to do. Send to bill@thelatest.co.uk
