» Starbucks Kemp Town protest

A demonstration will mark the first anniversary of a local campaign against Starbucks.
The protest will take place outside the coffeehouse in St James’s Street, Kemp Town, Brighton on Saturday 9 May at midday. Everyone who objects to the retailer‘s behaviour in opening and continuing to trade without planning permission is invited to attend.
The chain applied for planning permission retrospectively and was refused last May. It has appealed against that decision and a public inquiry will be held at Brighton Town Hall on Wednesday 10 June at 10am.
Protester Jon Barrenechea said it was “outrageous and arrogant” that Starbucks had opened without permission. He said: “It is disrespectful to the area they claim to want to be a part of. I don’t think their attitude is intentional, they have this business plan and it goes ahead regardless of what stands in their way.
“With a local business, you can talk to the owner. With a corporation, there is no accountability. We want to protect the local guy.”
