» Sunday Market under threat

Ralph Miller looks at the threat posed to Brighton’s much-loved Sunday Market

Stallholders have collected 1,200 signatures against closures of Brighton’s Sunday Market.
The market which takes place on the upper level of Brighton station car park has suffered a series of cancellations, including at short notice on 23 November.
Network Rail say access has been required for replacement buses during engineering works. The next market is 7 December, but it will be cancelled the following weekend and further disruption is expected as the works continue. Coun Dee Simson, city council cabinet member for community affairs, said: “I’m out of pocket from lost income and I’d hate to see the death of the market. If people go one or two times without it being open, it will put them off”.
Coun Simson said she had tried to look at an alternative site at Preston Barracks, Lewes Road, but market organisers Bray Associates did not think it would be appropriate. The death of the market, she said, would be a real loss to the city.
A Network Rail spokesman said: “Our priorities, when undertaking improvement work, is the safety of the wider community and minimising disruption to passengers’ journeys.”
